Contemporary American Folk-Art Horn
« on: January 17, 2025, 04:19:52 AM »
This is my 75th numbered Powder Horn.

A confession: I almost never have a design in mind when I set down to begin decorating these. It starts with the upper borders and goes from there. That's part of the adventure of it for me. These horns might be a lot better if there was a "Master Plan" in mind, but for some reason I just can't work that way.
You can see some Pennsylvania-Dutch influences in the design, which seems to be a developing theme in many of my horns. I am also beginning to incorporate some blended inks to add attractive accents to the piece. I also have several favorite designs that are used more frequently as I build up a portfolio.
The double-ring throat band and the small transition step into the main horn body are just features I incorporate frequently now. I also included a blank medallion on the off-side that will bear the owner's initials, which is a neat feature.
This is not a copy of any historical horn or a horn influenced from any regional 'school', but rather a piece of Contemporary American Folk Art.
I still plan to make the more traditional type horns, but its so fun experimenting in this genre.

Whatever the theme or plan, or none whatsoever your style works for me. Another beautiful horn!
