Jacob Pryne's Horn, 1772 (Horn #80)

Jacob Pryne's Horn, 1772.
Today I finished making this nice little Powder Horn (#80). The old cow horn was given to me by a friend and it has such character already that I wanted to enhance it, so I tried making a horn that looked period. The engraving is lighter and some appears 'worn away' with age. I used a chestnut colored India ink to emulate antique horns as well, with just a tiny bit of color in spots. And because it measures just 10-1/2" from spout to staple, it seemed like a good size for a youth's horn. That got me thinking of creating a story- that this Powder Horn was a gift to a boy from his father on his 12th Birthday way back in 1772.
I kept the artwork very simple and crude, and incorporated a folksy farm scene with a couple of hex symbols, because it's 'from' Lancaster, Pennsylvania and also because I just like them.
The Base plug and stopper are from darkened Cherry, and it has a twisted staple. The base measures 2.25" x 2".
This is a Right Side Carry horn.
Its a really warm looking piece and charming in a rustic sort-of way.
