Mariano Medina “Old Lady Hawken” Copy
« on: March 02, 2025, 07:02:09 AM »
I recently became the care taker of this beautiful rifle. .50 cal. Roller lock dated 67, HW Robbin’s trigger, GR Douglas barrel. A fine curly stock with all the Star inlays and close to original patch box…….I’m told Ed White built it……but it’s not marked any where with anything to prove that. Engraved plate on the stock says “J.W. Stotlar”.

Barrel is 36”, 1 1/8”.

And I’m told it was pictured on page 30 of “ Hawken Rifles The Mountain Man's Choice” by John Baird. But I’m not certain….

Anyone have any info on this beauty?

It is indeed on page 30 - Plate # 41 and is attributed to Ed White.

It's there on page 30.My lock and Robbins triggers.Harold Robbins made locks and trigges and did a good job .He had to work in a wheel chair because he fell off a roof.I met him at Friendship and offered him display space with me at the open corner of the "sheep shed".but he declined the offer and had to leave early.
Recently the name and initials of Leonard Meadows came up here and I have his death notice from April of 1976 along with a LOT of other long departed friends. found all these in Baird's book after thinking the were lost.

No idea at all about Mr.Stotlar.you might call the NMLRA and see if he is listed as a current or past member.

Being the "caretaker" for a rifle as fine as this is a huge responsibility which comes with unneeded pressure. I will be happy to take over that role and ease your fatigue. I will even go so far to help you out to pay the postage to my home.
Really, thanks for posting it, a wonderful piece anyone would love to own.

I have been interested in the Mariano Medina rifle for well over 25 years. However, this is not the rifle pictured on page 30 of Baird's book.
Even as crappy as the photos are in the book you can tell that the butt plate is different as well as the lock. The Ed White rifle's lock and barrel both appear
to have been left in the white. You have to do some careful looking to see that White's patch box side plates are pierced like the original, this ones are not.
This rifle seems to be a fair representation of Medina's rifle. It is not a bench copy by any means. It has a good quality barrel and an outstanding lock.
But there are a lot of small details that are missing.

No offense but the rifle pictured is not even close to the Medina Hawken. I've held the original in my hands long enough for it to get warm while discussing with Jim Gordon.

On the obituary website Ancient Faces, there is listed John W Stotlar born May 23rd 1924 and died April 2nd 2001.  No other info. Guessing your rifle was made during the Hawken “craze” in the ‘70s-‘80s, this could possibly be your guy.  He’d have been about the right age to be able to afford a nice rifle.
