Help dating and ID of Blunderbuss
« on: November 18, 2025, 06:44:06 PM »
Would be grateful for help (I am a novice...inherited this) with deciphering marks on my blunderbuss.  My relative took it to the Antiques Roadshow 25 or so years ago and they said it was by the East India Company.  I would be interested in more info from the marks...like date, etc.  Thanks you!

Hi,
The marks with "GP" and "V" on the barrel are 18th century proof marks for the London Gunmaker's Guild.  The crown over "IB"  I believe is for John Brazier who did work for the EIC in the 1760s.  The lock with lion rampant is probably from the end of the 1700s and indicates the East India Company (EIC).  However, the gun was restocked and probably made up in India or some other SE Asian country from older parts salvaged from different guns.  I suspect it is from the early to mid 1800s.

The lock certainly is EIC. The barrel has London proofs. The stock is clearly not English, the shape and decoration are all wrong so it looks as if it's an EIC weapon restocked in India for native use.

Thank you!  Since your posts I found a reference for John Brazier marks and the marks match mine exactly.  Will look forward to learning more about the history and how/where it might have been used.
