Bag and horn, by Doug Horn from Iowa.
Looks like you smacked that grouse pretty good. What shot charge do you shoot out of your fowler?

60 gr. 3FFF, 80 gr. equivalent of #6 shot. I think he was roughed up from being carried through the brush.

OK- LOL. 603F roughly equivalent to 70gr. 2F = 2 1/2 drams powder.
80gr. measure of shot is equivalent to 1 1/8oz. shot. Nice load!
IT is about what I shoot in my cylinder bored SxS "12 bore".

I suspect it would keep a tighter pattern with 2F, I just don't keep it on hand.

Ric - I've also shot 1F in it for good patterns, same load.

Here is the one I used with the 54 caliber smooth rifle don Bruton made for me. In a moment of sheer stupidity I let this one get away and I have had seller remorse ever since. The onlyu good news is Don created a new 40 caliber poor boy that should arrive tomorrow.

Went to the Kearney Nebraska trade convention and found what I was looking for. Over Christmas, my father gifted me this large horn for my trade gun, and the bag I had wasn't what I wanted. It would have been fine for a small bore, but without a gusset for balls and shot, and with the narrow strap, it just wasn't working. I found this bag at the show, made by Ed Wood and was being sold out of his estate by his widow. Ed has known me since I was a baby. I saw this bag and everything clicked. Its exactly what I want, and it's very clever. It has a hanger for the powder measure to be used while shooting. The pick is tied to the bag and has a sheath on the lid of the bag. A separate closed pouch on the outside of the bag for felt wads and overshot cards. It came with an altoid tin painted to a dull brown. It is lined with felt to prevent stuff rattling around in the tin. A separate container in the can holds flints in their own container so they aren't damaged by the tools in the bag. I also found this small shot container. Its flat, and holds 12 ounces of shot. Perfect. The small horn is no bigger Than it needs to be for prime. It is hand stitched with linen thread, and has a 2 inch gusset in the bottom of the bag. It is exactly what I wanted in a bag, accoutrements, and horn. Sometimes stuff just seems to come together.

Thank you both. I think it will be quite a handy bag and a nice horn to match.

I use the same bag for everything.  Made it ? 1996-7  I guess. If I change calibers I change
the balls inside & maybe powder flask of horn of FF to FFF, & maybe add wads or cards maybe. Maybe swap the short starter if taking a small bore.  No stitching & a lil oil on the leather bout
every 5 yrs. Most I need is in the bag or on the strap. Cant see it but a forged vent pick is clipped
on the back side of the knife sheath. That lil Damasus knife will last a hundred years.  I like
a simple bag one could make in the wild & nothing flashy that will catch attention. I turn that
short starter around so it is against me.  I have several, but always grab this one.
