tang inlet/bedding
« on: February 06, 2010, 02:45:07 AM »
Gents, I`m on my first build. Managed to make all the usuall mistakes I`m sure, but till now I think my work will do. I`m getting close to where I can start to finish the stock and components, but have noticed a potential problem. While gripping the forestock, I thought I detected movement, the barrel to stock fit felt spongy. I look a little closer and when squeezing I can see movement (.020-.030). If I loosen the tang screw the tang raises a bit (.020-.030). The stock/barrel tightens like when I first inlet the breechplug. I tighten it again a I can hear a little creak as the components mate, and the gaps back. My guess is I took too much material out of the stock under the tang when I inlet it. Now to fix it... Should I try to bend the tang down a little to match my inlet, or maybe bed it with a compound of sorts? I`m not sure what would be the best move atm......  Thx   Kerry

With the tang loose, make sure the barrel itself sits and bottoms out reasonably well all along the barrel channel.  If the tang is not bottoming out either without cranking it down, here is the solution.  Take a slip of wood and cut it out to fit inside the tang inlet and glue it in place with something like Titebond II or III.  When it is dry, simply re-inlet the tang as it should be.   ;)
When a reenactor says "They didn't write everything down"   what that really means is: "I'm too lazy to look for documentation."

Stophel, thx so much...The barrel sits well all the way with the tang loose. Its only as I tighten that things want to move...  Regards...Kerry
