Appropriate "double dovetailed" front site on Southern Rifle?
« on: February 11, 2010, 06:49:01 PM »
I have an original southernish hog rifle whose barrel has been shortened to 35 inches during its working life. Unfortunately the front site dovetail is too close to the muzzle end to look right and I think it was cut by somebody enjoying some moonshine. (The front site is missing as well.)
I have seen original southern rifles with a double dovetailed front site and I thought this might be cool on this rifle. Has anyone seen a shortened rifle with this front site treatment?
Thanks,
Rick

Rick,
I know of a Philip Gillespie rifle that has a double dovetailed base on a 37 inch barrel. I can not remember if the barrel appeared to have been cut or was built that way. I suspect it was re-breeched. Sorry I don't have a photo of the sights.
