Just another 'lucky' antler measure

Named this one Lucky.  Mostly due to getting lucky finishing this without buggering it up. 
About 5 inches long, holds 60 grains and left it in a pot of hot tea to get some color.

Well, aside from a coat of wax periodically, I don't know how you will.  If checks and/or cracking occurs I guess it will add more character and we'll chaulk it up as aging gracefully.

I would think that handling would be the best treatment.  Like a powderhorn, the more it is handled the more oils it absorbs from your skin to keep it from drying out.  If it just hung on a bag or layed in a drawer it would for sure dry out.

Don't worry about it.  It is made from antler, another form of bone, and the only way I could see it checking or cracking is if you threw it outside for a couple of years or buried it.

Now measures made from horn might be a different story, but if you use it often you shouldn't need to worry.

I have antleeeeer and horn measures that are 25-30 plus years old and they are still check and crack free.  Some of them have changed a bit in color.
