New Pouch and Horn
« on: February 17, 2010, 07:32:00 PM »
Hi Folks:

I just completed this for a customer down in South Carolina. Since it is little different than some sets I have made, I thought you might find it interesting.

The pouch is based on a Southern Appalachian piece, but 1" larger overall at 7.5" wide by 8" deep. The flap was shortened and rounded as well. Made from cowhide, the body is lined with hemp. Seams are welted. There is 4.5" wide hanging inside pocket. Shoulder strap is 1" wide with a buckle adjustment.

The horn is based on an early piece with 2 rings on the throat and a simple spout treatment. The base plug is slightly domed pine. It measures a little over 11" around the curve.

Comments, criticisms, or any other forms of self-expression are always welcome.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,
Another great bag and horn. I really like the horn. What did you do to get the color in the bag?

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the nice comments.

The pouch is my first one to use no aniline dyes at all. I used a combination of iron, vinegar, polishes, water-based concoctions, and other items. It was a little scary at first, but I think it came out okay.

The horn was dyed using the usual methods that I mostly learned from studying Scott and Cathy Sibley's book. The antiquing is based on their methods as well, although I do deviate on some things.

Glad you like them. The Southern pouches and horns will always be my favorites. I guess that is why I focus on them with my work.

Thanks,

Jeff

You did good Jeff.  The horn and pouch are a perfect marriage.  They compliment each other well.  Many try but only a few accomplish such harmony.

Jeff, can't find anything to fault as usual and I'll have to ditto with the fellas prior to me. Great set in harmony.
