Wooden Patchbox

  Is there a tutorial on making a wooden Patchbox? I was going to use a brass patchbox on my Jeager style Rifle, But after some consideration I've decided on a wooden one. Acer touches slightly on shaping a lid on his website, But not so much on cutting the box or the inner grooves that hold the lid in place.

There is a very detailed method described in The Gunsmith of Grenville County which is what I used the first time I did one.  It is much simpler than you think to make one.  Also, if you are the type to use milling machines there is an article by Fred Stutzenberger a few months ago in Muzzle Blasts that is very helpful.

Recreating the American Longrifle is very good also.

The dovetail grooves in the buttstock are all handwork, unless you have a Bridgeport.  ;D

I think Gary Brumfield just described his method recently. Maybe look on his site, or go back thru some of his posts. (flintriflesmith)

  Thanx guy's    I have been toying with an idea, just keep's running thru my mind. I think I'm going to try something a little different, put a little twist on it. Think outside the patchbox.  ;Dpun intended

Jack Brooks did a write up on how to do wooden patchboxes with a modified triangular file last spring, looked very interesting.

Hello Tim,

I have found the John Bivins description from his old Rifle Magazine article to be extraordinary in its detail and anticipation of possible challenges. It is of the two piece construction, which for me has yielded better fit than the one piece construction.  The modified files mentioned are of great assistance.  If you call me during my workday, I can rummage around my file box and find the source on the files. They are course cut,  non tapered, machine files.   541-858-2800

I thought I saw a tutorial for a 2 piece on the old sight.  Looked at the current ones and did not see it.

If you click on the logo you will find jerry crawfords post making a patchbox.
 under gunbuilding.

   THANK YOU, I've been looking for this section for a while.  I found it once but couldn't remember where it was.   Apperently alot of us either don't know about it or simply forgot about it.  I will make a note to reference it in the future.
