50 yards and 3/4" groups ???
« on: March 22, 2010, 03:16:30 AM »
Are 3/4" groups at 50 yards off a rest anything to brag about?   It is the best I have done (repeatably).   I have a new-to-me rifle and that's the groups I am able to get with its open sights.

I don't know what kind of groups you all might be shooting at 50 off a rest, and would like to know for comparison sake.   Thanks.

That sounds about like my personal best untill the sun changed and opened up the thing to the not talking about it size.  I then made a shader and it helped alot. Like Don says-that was when my eyes were younger.   Gary

3/4" is very good.  I've heard of better consistancy, but never seen anyone do it.  1/2" is even better yet.  If it's a new gun to you, with practise with that rifle, sights and load, it can get even better.  Sometimes the sights and loads just work perfectly for a guy.

If you're doing this off x-sticks, you should enter into the NMLRA X-Stick competition.  You'd be looking at a perfect 50 yard score with all X's,,, as long as you keep the 5 shots center.

Nice shooting!

Yeah, I'd be happy.  Nice shooting. ;)  I can get under 2" at 50 off a bench, but that's about it.  With my glasses on I have trouble seeing the sights, with them off I have trouble seeing the target.

Thanks for the replies guys!   I am heading to bed, but will respond tomorrow.   I probably should have clarified the 3/4" groups were measured center-to-center (not outside edge to outside edge).   May or may not make a difference to your replies to me.   Thanks much.

At least you know that the accuracy potential is there. Now, to duplicate it offhand...that is where my problem comes in!!!!! :'(

Skychief, center to center is how it's done because of the ball size differences.

Just for information, is it a tight combination?  What are you doing as to ball patch combo and lube.

Better be careful Skychief.  Pretty soon people will start asking you fer advice!

Yeah 3/4" is good.  Especially if repeatable as you say.

Move on to 100 yards and see if you can do better than 1.5".  Then start shooting from other-than-bench-rest positions.

If you can punch out the X with 5 consecutive shots you might think about traveling around to chunk-gun matches.

Rodger,
You do have a way with words that brings a smile to my face from time to time

Skycheif
Sounds like good shooting. Keep practicing and try some off hand shots. Pay your dues with practicing off hand and it will pay off
