Did you already select a specific type (school) of rifle?  And from what era?  How large is the barrel at the breech end?  All of these and more come into consideration before a lock can be properly selected.  For example an early .54 cal Lancaster style from 1760 would have a much different lock required than a Tennessee .40 cal squirrel rifle from 1840.  Help us out with more details.

It will be what I would call a roman nose or I guess the leighigh school. I have heard some bad stuff about L&R mixed about Siler and not much about Davis. I need help you see the last Parts I bought was in the year of our lord 19 and 65. Been kind of a long dry spell.

Don't know where you would get mixed reviews on Chambers Siler locks... maybe that Siler isn't the right style for a Lehigh. I don't know them well, but I have a Roman nose Dauphin County gun with a small Siler....FAST!.. but I recommend that you read through the archives for this site re locks... In any event.......What size barrel will you be using??

Welcome Fred: The Chambers Siler will be ok on some of the Lehigh style guns and is an exelent lock.    Gary

Being plum dumb about the proper styles and such I got talked into building a Lancaster style 40 some years ago and always wanted a Roman nose anyway, the builder uses Siler locks and I don't remember what kind of barrels but he lets you pick. I do know it won't be anything I am familiar with that would be a Bill Large which I have on my old rifle or a Douglas. I have been reading about the special Siler lock and from what I see here that may be the way to go what about the vent any suggestions on that?

A COPY of an original late English lock, Joe Manton etc, with good forged springs. Looking for pure speed one of these with a recessed breech might be best.
Flat breech with a well made vent liner.
A well tuned SMALL Siler is good as is the small L&R #1700 (not a Manton design) but it will likely need the springs reworked  or replaced with forged springs. The #1700 would be fine for a post 1790s Landcaster rifle or similar age Kentucky.
