50 Cal.(Berks County?) Help with IDpictures added
« on: May 08, 2010, 12:52:41 AM »
I have a 50 Cal Straight Rifled Flint Lock which several people looking at photo's  say it most likely was made near Reading based on the patchbock design.
I have digital photos which I will try and upload
.Thanks in advance for any input

Nice rifle: thank you posting photographs. It appears to be a somewhat late (1815-1820)
Berks County piece. Some questions: Is there a name on the barrel; Is it carved anywhere else besides the forearm; Does the lockplate have a name on the face?
The PB engraving is nice, and also suggests that it was built during the later period.
Thanks again-Dick

The lockplate is marked T B in double lined letters. Not signed anywhere. carving is down each side of forearm Thur and highlighting the barrel wedges. Its a light and graceful gun for a 50 cal.The straight rifling is what gets me "Germanic"
The barrel is a reconversion ,or a weld up around the enlarged touch hole. The lock is original flint

George, one more question. Since the barrel has straight rifling, is it half round? Can't tell from the photos and also, how long is the barel?
There isn't enough to go on by the initials on the lock as to say who the lock maker was, but the fact that the barrel isn't signed is pretty much the case for far too many of the Reading rifles. Thanks again!

The next question is if its really straight or is it just very slow?
Straight makes more sense but one never knows.
I will be building a straight rifle for a friend when the barrel arrives.

Barrel is Octagon all the way .Rifling is as straight as a ruler
