Adjustable Sights for a Target Rifle
« on: May 18, 2010, 07:12:06 AM »
A question for the collective wisdom of the forum............
I am looking for adjustable sights for a target rifle I am building at the moment. It is an Ohio style rifle, brass mounted  ,half stocked in hard maple  .40 caliber and  fat barreled  . It's sole purpose is for shooting offhand at paper targets from 25 to 100 yds under NMLRA rules . While the rifle will be traditional I am willing  to compromise on the sights and need suggestions for a source or brand for good quality easy- to- see sights.

I am not looking for peeps or ladder sights or even sights with a stair step ramp or a slide .It needs to be an plain open sight which can be adjusted for windage and elevation and then pretty much ignored unless I start experimenting with different loads or patches. So it should be adjustable and sturdy.
I prefer a plain square post for the front.
Thicker is better. With a square or u shaped rear notch.

What or where should I be looking for a rear sight?
I ordered  Brownells catalog but the pictures are pretty small.
Someone suggested that an adjustable 1911 sight might work well especially as the rear sight will need to be a bit farther down the barrel to reduce eye strain .
While it sounded like a good idea I had never heard of one being used . Has anyone else heard of this ?
Is there a traditional solution ?
Thoughts ?

When I shot sillywett back in the day we would regularly use Bomars and similar pistol sights in the Creedmoor position.  I have in the past mounted one on an old .45 longrifle and it worked well.  Although not HC it will fulfill your needs.

If you are looking for sights that appear traditional, but encompass the ability to make elevation and windage adjustments consider California Sights as manufactured by Andy Faurtheree.  They are available from The Gun Works Muzzleloading Emporium(541-741-4118)  Item # 15040.  They will set you back about $50.00 but are about as good as it gets for something traditional.

Here is the sight most of the fellows I shoot with use, including myself, they come with a narrow slot so you can file to suit. Very good adjustments, although no clicks, still a good sight for targets. I know Log Cabin sells them along with a few people at Friendship, the last one I bought was $26 probably have gone up since then. This was the only pic I had in PB

Thanks Steve for the lead, I did not see it on Log cabin's on line catalog but that is exactly the kind of look I was hoping to see. A kind of home shop made  machinist look.I like the idea of a file- your-own- notch too. This would blend in nicely .

I had also looked at 1911 sights on Gunbroker  Stubshaft, and  think they really would work if someone made a kind of adaptive base for them.It looked like the Kimber sight might work better than the Bomars on an octagon barrel because of the dovetail.Either would offer a nice sight picture and few sharp edges.

So I called over to Log Cabin who did have these sights until recently but the gentleman who was making them has since died .
They are actively looking for a new supplier who can deliver the same quality and suggested checking back in the future.
Bummer.

These sights do not look too complicated to make but to make them well is another matter
I just need to figure out how to make a screw adjustable for windage rear sight .

addendum..
Cain's outdoors also had these at one time but are out of stock.
The pattern as it turns out was originally made by an old time target shooter named Peter Spense in Ohio .
Mr Spence was an real shooter in the day the 50's and 60's and also built rifles .His original pattern was copied since his death.
