Squirrel Rifle
« on: June 03, 2010, 07:13:24 PM »

Been playing with my camera and decided it would be fun to show my latest, just to prove that eventually I do complete a rifle.  Shot the rifle in the white last fall and finished it.  Poor boy design 25 cal squirrel rifle.  Rayel 3/4" barrel cut ot 36 inches.  It is a poor boy, no buttplate, L&R small Manton lock.  Hard to maintain proportions with a small barrel like that.  No grease hole as I couldn't bring myself to drill one.  I would thank a couple of folks for their advice but don't know if looking at it they would want to be mentioned, but they are very knowledgeable about Tennessee rifles.  MY photographic skills need a lot of work.

Actually the lock is fine, its the other 80% of the population that puts them on the wrong side.

Nice work, DP. Would you share what the metal plate(?) is that's located on the bottom, forward of the trigger guard? Thanks .. Bill

Looks just about right for me too.  Dang it, now I've got another one on the list to build!

That's a dandy little rifle.  You should give the bushy tails problems this fall!!

The bottom plate is for a fix due to the ##$$$%% ramrod drill that decided to come out the bottom.  It seemed to be going well and then took a turn.  I've drilled several holes and got too confident on this one and did not monitor the progress like I should have.  A 1/4 inch long drill bit is not as steady as a larger one.

Shoots pretty fair.  I got narrow groups with it as I ahd trouble seeing the front sight.  Replaced the sight but haven't really set down on a bench yet.  Seems to like 20 grains of Graf's 3f and a #3 buckshot pellet.  Patching is 015 and i have been using Bore Butter lube as it is a hunting type lube (When its used up will likely go back to Crisco)

great looking rifle... i can see why you didn't want to drill a grease hole.  (i don't have on in my rifle either, and for the same reason ... perhaps we should start a trend).

May not be as "authentic" not to have one, but I hate to mess up a pretty stock too.

Thank you.  The little gun is truly a fun gun to play with.  TOW sells pure lead buckshot and there is a guy named Scot Picket, Scot.Picket@Comcast.com that made a fast twist 33 cal for me whcih looks very nice.  It is also 3/4 inch.  He also makes a 28 cal that takes #1 buckshot.  The 28 would be a very nice little squirrel gun also.

I see no need for a patch box or grease hole in the stock of a southern po-boy rifle
most of my shooting is target or hunting for which I use a bullet board with pre- greased patches.  So why ruin a pretty piece of wood unnecessarily.

On my first build, a Tennessee style, I put in patch box on a beautiful walnut stock.
My wife was trying to tell me not to but I did and instantly hated it.  so for the next 30 years I have been occasionally reminded of it.

Its interesting that the ALR Library has two longrifles with no patchboxes.  One is a N Beyer and I think the other a Schroyer ???  I sometimes wonder if they were not used about as much then as now, which is very little.  I can also appreciate your 30 years of reminders, seems to go with the territory ;D

I rechecked and it was Abraham Schweitzer, still no lightweight in guns building.  The stock is a nice curly maple.

northmn:

Scott Pickett's .28 cal. barrels are usually fired with #2 buckshot.  #1 buck would be .30 cal.  His .33 cal. barrels will take #0 or #00 depending on how tight you like to shoot them.  Scott makes a real slick little barrel and as northmn said he can vary the pitch of the rifling.

More small bores! I'm having a lot of fun with my .25. With all my others being .50 and up, my next--after a current .50 project in the hands of Steve Zihn--will be a .40. Then I need something .32ish. Gotta talk with this Pickett fellow...

I am hoping the 33 with its faster twist, will be more accurate with a little lighter charge of powder like about 15 grains instead of the typical 20-25 that 32's like.  Be a while before it gets built.
