Here's a horn I'm in the process of making for a client who is in the army in Afghanistan.
He is from the southeastern part of Missouri so we selected a map of appropriate vintage and I have enhanced it with features he wanted (some of which I have yet to put on.)
I have carved a strap ring around the neck which flows into a fluted collar and then to a faceted spout.
I've engrailed the throat of the horn and engraved two bands, between which will be his name and a date.
Below that I've started the map and done a compass rose whose cardinal points are filled in with an oak leaf motif. The ring under the compass is engraved with a similar "vine" motif as the bands at the throat of the horn.
Around the base of the horn is a band filled in with representations of the foliage of the hardwoods indigenous to the Ozark Plateau as well as the only pine indigenous to the area.
In the center of the bottom band is 1" circle cameo of the clients cabin taken from a photo.
Here's the photo:
and here's the engraving:
So far, so good. I will try to post photos as I take them.
Have fun!
