Where in the Hickory

Well due to a recent storm, I may end up with some Hickory. :)  My interest here is in using the wood for ramrod stock, or hawk handles.  My problem is I am still very ignorant, in my education of living history, and wood working.  So my question is if I get any of these trees, do I want to keep the wood from the trunks, or the branches.  I have been told that the wood in the branches is "reactionary wood"  and would not be as well suited for use, due to internal stresses in the wood.  Any info of this topic would be great. ;)  Andy

Another thing to consider is bow staves if you get any main trunk pieces that are knot free and 72" long!

If the limb is thick enough to just ue the center wood that would be fine for tool handles, maybe even a hawk handle.  I have used large limbs for such things before.
