Another Flap Question...

All of this talk about flap decorating has gotten me to wondering if there is any historical examples of cross stitching done on bags as a decoration.  Not too sure about all that fancy sewing stitches, but I can do a good cross stitch.

From what I have seen, other than military cartridge boxes having sayings embossed or painted, or unit designations, metal badges ect Ive not seen much in the way of flap decoration on shoulder bags 

There is some really cool modern art in the shoulder bag world, both in leather and embroiderd cloth, but it does not look like anything Ive seen from the period....

If you have or can get to a copy of Madison Grant's book "the Kentuky Rifle Hunting Pouch", he shows some bags with fancy and pierced flaps. He also discusses time periods for these.
