Fowler Bag
« on: June 14, 2010, 02:17:26 AM »
Working on an idea for an eastern Fowler bag ,so put it down on some old boot leather.
Going to make some minor pattern changes before I hack into elk hide.
Here is the prototype complete with hemp twine strap.
Love putting ideas down into leather.
Has two front pleats and a large back pocket.

I like it, especially the detail on the flap banding. It looks plenty roomy.

Buddy way up north getting this bag ... threw a strap on it for him and a buckle to adjust for gravity and meals.
Here is a picture showing the tapered gusset.

I like it too.  Is there a lining in the bag?

no
this leather had such a soft split side, I did not want to cover it up.
been looking for 1-2 0z pig or goat skin to line bags.
Found some in Kalifornia earlier this evening.
Also going to try some PERIOD CORRECT india printed fabric too.
Sorry this bag did not warrant comments.
I humbly apologize for posting it.

Don't take it personnaly there Groundhog!!  ;D  Speaking for myself I was kinda waiting to see what you were going to do with it...you said in your first post that  it was inititial work.

I like the bag and your design with the interior pocket, and especially after you oiled it and put the flat straps on... Not sure about the concave shape of the flap. Should it lay flatter to the bag? What makes it dound out like that???

A suggestion for you when sewing the strap or strap attachment to the bag I was taught to stitch a semi-circle     with the opening toward the top rather than a straight line across the strap.... Holds the weight better or something like that..and apparently was used by early makers.. I am not sure but it seemed to make sense.

BTW  I like the lace trim...How did you do that??   I like it without adding any fabric or other lining,  I would be proud to wear it!!

Leather was a bit stiff ... really softened up after first oil treatment
flap needs to be used n will lay down atop pouch.
Yes if you circle stitch the "pucker" will go to center with weight ... looks better on
a harness.
Lace trim was hand cut , used a brass tube to make impressions to cut around.
looks real good if ya stand back aways ...
Leather softens upp with use and the fiber picks up memory ...
kinda think this bag will develope character.
Really appreciate the comments, I was afraid I somehow had offeneded ...
