Banded Horn With Pewter/Antler Tip
« on: June 16, 2010, 05:10:09 PM »
This is my interpretation of the last of the three horns used in the article on NC Banded horns in the Jan issue of The Horn Book. The horn is about 12 ½” around the outside curve. The Walnut base is about 2 ¼” and is held in with 8 steel pins. The bands were boiled and pressed on as far as possible then pinned, 2 each. The tip is two part, antler and pewter, the antler is pinned to the pewter and the pewter to the horn.     Looking at the tip in the picture in the article I was not sure if it was pewter and antler or just horn and antler, I decided to go with the pewter and antler. The color on the body is a combination of cloth dye and oil based leather dye. The bands were done with AF and the whole thing covered in brown shoe polish and buffed with a brush.

Tim, I think I like this one best of all! The darker colored original horns one runs into always look interesting to me, and I think you did a great job on the finish with this. Everything goes together really well.

Thanks for sharing it.

Tim,

The color contrast between the bands and the red base on the horn body is stunning.

Tim excellent rendition as usual.  I like how you married the pewter and antler and the color combination is excellent.
Thanks for sharing Tim.

Great looking horn Tim.  You do an outstanding job!  I'm glad I got my TC horn before you get to rich and famous for me to afford one.
