few horns i made
« on: June 24, 2010, 11:40:10 PM »
got a box of horns a while back and have finished up a few of them. the first one is a leftie with a woven strap. its has an osage baseplug and the horn strap is tied on thru holes that go at an angle from the base into the edge of the horn. its dyed with rit dye. the next one is just a plain horn with a rit dyed neck and maple base plug. the next picture has a couple of first styles for me in it. the top horn is cowhorn. it was a blue/grey colored horn and i carved it to resemble a trade horn pictured in one of the books of buckskinning. the same horn was dyed green and i dyed this one with a mix of rit dye, even the maple base is dyed green. i left it a bit rough and added a wrap at the spout of veg tan pigskin. the next 2 are my first and second tries at a banded horn. id like to thank Gary Elsenbeck for the help with the 3 banded horn and some good advise. i blew the tip out on it and Gary saved me with this one turned from apple. the bands were filed and sanded to fit. i heated them and pressed them on, and pinned them in place. both base plugs started out as wood balls from the craft store and were cut to rough shape with a dremel then filed to fit and final shape, made me wish i had a lathe. i hollwed them out too to save weight. these 2 were colored with the Old Bones sold by Dixie.

thanks guys. horn work has sure been a learning experience for me. not quite as forgiving as leather work. id like to nail down a style of horn and get good at it. i know it wont be a ringed one with a domed base, hand filing those domes and rings was a lot of work.

Jason, looking good horns.  I really like the 3 in the last photo.  Great job. Gary

Nice work. Sell the horns buy a lathe, even a small/middy type, you will never regret it.

Jason,

That's a nice looking bunch of horns.  Tim is right...sell them all and buy yourself a lathe.  You'll not regret it.
