Colerain Barrels - Hard to get?
« on: July 09, 2010, 07:25:08 PM »
Gentlemen,
Can anyone tell me if Colerain octagon to round barrels are curently hard to get? I have a kit on order and have been waiting patiently for over 4 months to get it. The reason I am told is Colerain is severely back logged. The vendor did tell me that his are custom profiled which I'm sure might have some bearing on it. Is there any truth to this? I realize 4 months isn't a ridiculous amount of time to wait but I was originally told it would only be 1- 2 mos. and I want to be sure I'm not getting a line of BS.

Thanks!

Try Troy Rupp with Stonewall Creek outfitters. he has quite a few Colrain barrels in stock. TOTW seems to be out of about all Colerain barrels at the moment.

Doesn't sound like BS to me. Custom barrels can have a 6 mo to a year wait time.

I'm in the same boat.  I have mentally suppressed the urge to get wound up about it at this point.  If it ends up being a winter project so be it.
But I sure was hoping to shoot it this summer! :D

I bet Tip Curtis will have some.

I am waiting on as well on a 32" English fowler barrel. Scott at Colerain has always answered my emails quickly and said he really needed to make a run of oct to round barrels this summer. Hope he does or I will have a tough time finishing my gun in time to turkey hunt with it next season.

Tip had some yesterday because I saw them.  Don't know if they are what you want, but may be worth a call.  Tip is at  615-654-4445.

Rich,

I've been waiting since August 2009 for a 44" 12 guage oct to rnd from Colerain.  I ordered it through TOW.  I spoke to Scott at Colerain and he told me that they are expected to get this line rolling by the end of the month.  So hopefully I can get my barrell before the one year mark?  ::)

Hmmm? Colerain like everyone else in the barrel business is busy. Why would you think it is TRS's fault?

It really comes down to who stocks the most number of barrels. Between Stonewall Creek and Tip Curtis you should have a really good shot at getting what you need. When I tried to get a NE Fowler kit from Chambers last month, they were in the same boat....waiting on barrels. Personally, I have gotten spoiled, having 44 and even 46 in barrels , available pretty much on demand.  I can remember when getting any kind of swamped or oct/round barrel was a big deal.

As Bob said, I also think it may be a distributor issue, and some carry very small inventories. Hence the question.....I have had this problem with TRS for some things. ultimately they come through but Tip for example tends to carry a larger inventory and\or be able to get barrels faster......??   The economy has made it difficult to build and hold large inventories and difficult for distributors to carry big inventories.....that being said, some do higher volume and have more inventory on hand......So maybe everybody needs to quit building with OTR barrels for a while!! ;) ;) ;D

Gentlemen,
First and foremost it's not The Rifle Shoppe. I'm not going to say who it is out of respect for them. I don't believe I'm getting a line and as I said, he did tell me he uses a custom profile. I just wanted to be 100% sure. Sounds to me like Colerain is truly backed up so I'll just continue to patiently wait. The only issue is it's for my son and he's chomping at the bit to get his first flinter and honestly, so am I.

Thanks much!

Colerain does do some custom profiles.  If indeed you are getting one of those non-standard barrels, you can expect a longer wait time.

Custom profiles are a long lead time. If you can't wait a year then use a standard profile. I have 2 barrels on order going on a year and I am fixing to order 5 more that may take that long. These are not Colerain barrels but re-guardless they are custom profiles and they come after the bread and butter barrels are made unless you are one of the high profile builders.

It is going to take long enough to get my barrels, if I can find a 48" barrel the right cal. I may hand  profile the barrel.

The last time I ordered a custom barrel, it took me a year to get it.    If it is non-standard, you had best expect at least a year.   There are small shops turning these things out, and there isn't the revenue to justify more than that.    Be glad you can get it at all.

Now you understand why we production builders buy three when we need only one.   That way we beat the competition on time lapse.  You should be able to buy some barrels at Dixon's, outside, directly from the makers or from jobbers who sell stuff there.

What I was told was Green Mountain was busy filling military contracts and the other mfgs. were trying to take up the slack hence getting back logged. supposedly GM is now attempting to fill 2 years of back orders so hopefully this will end soon.

Spoke with Scott today. He just finished a run of 'Bess' barrels, and is about to run OTR's, then 42" swamped......sells all he makes. No 44", they already ran and are out, so I ordered 2 44" from the next run, which may be around Christmas.  He told me if I needed one sooner to call Troy at Stonewall Creek.

Seems like barrels in general are in short supply.  I've had my Chamber's Penn fowler kit for several months but am still waiting on the barrel to arrive.  Seems to be the general state of affairs at the moment.

I just received a 44" C weight .50 today that a customer had sent to me for inletting.  It came directly from TOTW.  I don't think he ordered it more then a week ago.
