Seminars at Dixon's by ALR Members

I am planning to have a handout on the "outriggers" I have on my workbench which, as of
now, I would really miss if I didn't have them.   They have become extremely useful in building a gun...........Don

Do you have a pic?

Maybe you could stick up a link to the handout in PDF? After the "talk" of course.

I split this topic off to a new thread so's not to hijack the "Workshop" thread.

SuperC,
You read my mind!  And to take it a step further, here's a request to all the ALR members who are Dixon presenters.  Would it be possible for you to post a version of your seminar here on ALR?  I'm sure it would be most appreciated by the members, especially those who aren't able to attend the Fair.  Thanks in advance.

just my two cents,  the handouts are normally incidental to the presentation itself,  a supporting document that doesn't really cover the topic.

I understand not everyone can get there, I miss one now and then and its only a five hour drive,  however those of us on the east coast need to get some value out of staying here.   ;D

and at the risk of starting a fuss,  the organizers put a tremendous effort into this event, I wonder how fair it would be to them to dilute the presentations by making them widely available.  although, on the other hand I realize the other side of this arguement is the reason for the event is educatiion and keeping the craft alive.  I do argue with my self often.

Isn't the Tutorial section of this Board set aside special for something like this?

The seminars, are each so different in content and style of presentation that the only way to re present them here would be on video.  Some are actual demonstrations like butt plug turning, and then there was Ian Pratt's talk on forged iron mounts with original pieces that he passed around , and took questions, and a slide show on casting mounts.  I'm sure that some of us that go will share what we can.

If you go to the Dixon's site, there is a schedule with times.  Some our members presenting, are Ian Pratt, Barbie Chambers, Mark Wheeland, Eric VonE., Dave Keck, Jim Chambers, Art DeCamp, Tom Curran, and Don of course, and possibly others that use a handle, that I don't know.  Barbie, is doing Building a kit gun, Jim is doing lock assembly Art is doing a two part on screw tip horn making, There is a diversity of subjects from soap making to the one everyon on ALR wants to hear about "The Golden Mean"  Eric's doing longrifle design, dimension, and drafting.  There are so many talks, that you could be in seminar for all two and a half days and never see a vendor.

I'm giving a seminar on basic engraving. It's really hard to convey much of anything in a half hour slot. I do have a handout, but it's really just a supplier list.

What I try to teach is that engraving can start as a very simple process, with very simple tools. I like to focus on what a working smith might hope to accomplish with hand tools. Again, this seminar is just 'scratching the surface', so to speak, but its real purpose is to give someone sitting on the edge a little nudge of confidence to get started.

Tom

my dated handout. One item that can be hard to come by is Neil Hartliep's book. It's the best book for the money, but it's out of print. It can sometimes be found on ABE or Amazon.

I will tell you that using Acer's simple advice and practicing, you can do quite well.

You will have to pick and choose which seminar to attend from the board at right side of the macadam driveway to the judjing garage..... They go on 2 at a time one in the tent and the other in the barn cellar across the road,  Nice and cool there...

Keith Casteel gave a good seminar last yr with a pictorial handout on tuning a flinter lock very good I would add. :)
