D Boone's Hat?? Quaker Top Hat
« on: July 11, 2010, 09:51:34 PM »
In "My Father Daniel Boone" by Nathan Boone he stated that his father never wore, and didn't like Coonskin hats.

He has been said to wear a Quaker top hat of the mid 18th century. So what did the is Quaker top hat look like???? It is difficult to find solid evidence but here is some indications of what I think he might well have worn:

"He preferred a broad-brimmed hat–much like the ones his Quaker relatives wore–and which provided protection from the sun." Gene Ray, ggggg grandson of Daniel Boone
© 2008, State Historical Society of Missouri

"In the second half of the 18th century the crown became lower and the brim wider and turned up at the sides. This was termed in America the Quaker or Penn- sylvania hat, after William Penn, the English Quaker who founded Pennsylvania. It was also referred to as a Holland hat from its popularity with Dutch Quakers. By the 1680s this hat was made of grey or brown beaver or felt and was sometimes termed a 'wide-awake' hat."

The history of the Mennonite men's hat is somewhat similar. The eastern Pennsylvania men, including the Amish, generally adopted the "Quaker" broad-brimmed, flat-crowned (uncreased) hat

Stephen Hopkins was a signor of the Declaration of Independence who became a Quaker in his 40,'s, adopted the quaker tophat and never took it off to anyone, He is in two paintings of the signing and of the Congress in which he is shown wearing his hat. My Avatar is a painting of him wearing his Quaker tophat

So I asked Morgan Shea to make me a Quaker tophat. We looked at these pictures and other contemporaneous drawings of Quaker;s in the 18th century and came up with this design.

Daniel Boone By George Caleb Bingham (1852)

This is the Daniel Boone Monument at Appalachian state University

This a fur-felt (beaver??) hat by Morgan Shea..And yes I probably look more like the Quaker oats man than ol Dan'l...and neither of them wore facial hair...so just look at the hat!!

Your thoughts???

Doc, I like that hat a lot.  I have one that is similar, but different, that I got from Clearwater Hats a couple of years ago.  Black fur felt, flat crown and a broad brim.  Not as nicely shaped as your quaker hat but I like it all the same.

Pay no attention to those colored glasses.  Just trying to clear up a slight dose of Cupid's itch....  ;)

From your name, may I assume you can claim a familial connection to Daniel Boone?  I am not related by blood but have a connection to the Boone family, as well.  I am a descendant of Robert Hodgen, who moved to Kentucky to claim a land warrant for his service during the Revolution and settled in what is now Larue County.  He bought the land for his mill on the Nolin River from Squire Boone in 1788 or thereabouts.  Family history says that Robert Hodgen was a friend of the Boones and also of the Lincolns over at Sinking Spring Farm.  Robert's daughter Sarah was among the ladies who attended Mrs. Lincoln when she gave birth to her son, Abraham in 1809.

Thanks for posting all the great pictures.  I have never seen that picture of the Boone Memorial before.

Super neat hat.

Only suggestion for a correct 18th century replication would be starting with a round blocked blank.

I think it's a dandy hat! I thought so when Morgan made it. Good taste.
As far as facial hair, I think in my case it covers up a multitude of chins. Would you agree Rowland?

I went to ASU for undergrad and masters.  I sat next to that statue many times and occasionally talked to it.

Steve, I must concur with your observation.  At this point in life, I don't dare shave off my beard for fear of what I might find beneath it... With the beard I look distinguished; without it I look like a frog.

Hmmm, Morgan will have to reply to that.........All I know is that the opening looked round when I received it and I had to steam it several times, force it on my head and let it dry on my head to get it to fit...never had to do that with a modern hat??

Sounds like it may be a round block to me then.
I had thought he said he was using an oval block set-up in a prior thread.

Will this be for general use for running to the hardware and grocery store or more specialized events such as Dixon's, CLA, etc.?
I seriously ask this question as I know some guys wear some of their gear everywhere.

Tim - I like it!  Sort of practical too - the turned up edges will keep dew and rain from running off onto your shoulders, and more importantly, I find that I wide brimmed hats cut down on my hearing a bit - so the turned up sides give you a little more ability to hear things above you - not a bad thing in the woods, especially squirrel hunitng.

James,    Well, I wear the outfit to work everyday!!!  ;D :) ;)    Black is probably not so cool in the hot sun, but boy that brim cast a shadow!!   I am interested to see how the brim holds up to rain... course I can always reshellac it if necessary

I think it is for events...maybe I'll wear it deer hunting this fall just to give it some character!!

I think it is a capital idea! It's uniqueness compared to the other period hats you see so many of will make you easy to spot at an event (unless you have started a fad).
I will keep a weather eye out so we can meet and I can get a look at that English bullet gun you are working on  ;D

Hey i just went back to Morgan's posts and here is what he said:

"My blocks are simple dome shaped and all sit at 4 - 4.25 inches high. They are oval shaped around the circumference (base of the crown).

Cheers
Morgan Shea"

So I guess this hat must have come from the last 5-10 years or so of Daniel's life as no one is supposed to have figured out how to make an oval block until somtime around then   :o :o ;D   It sure wasn't the same oval shape as my head though.... I have bruises!!

See you at CLA!

Hello All

A word on the blocks. Some of the simple domes are roundish some are oval-ish. The flat topped ones that I used for tim's hat would certainly lean in the direction of oval shaped. The nature of felt is a tricky thing. The manner in which a modern felt hat can be blocked and still be made flexible and even crushable so that no custom fitting is needed is a closely guarded secret in the professional hat industry. Hats of the nature that I make need to be hand fit to an individuals head. Felt by it's nature when loosely shaped into a "hood" can be quite floppy, but with steam and shaping it automatically starts to stiffen as the fibers are compressed. Add stiffening agents to the mix and it becomes quite rigid. This is why with all my hats I include instructions to custom fit the hat. All my hats are blocked to the circumference of the head, but the fitting only comes with steaming wearing sweating drying and repeating as often as needed. Without modern technology involved (such as vinyl bands) hats are a living breathing animal that likes to expand and contract with the weather. Remember most hats would have been worn everyday, and would not have the chance to shrink.

Cheers

Well...pardon my vulgarity....but while we are on the topic...legend has it that syphilis infected mad hatters soaked their mercury tainted urine onto the felt to wet it for shaping...the results were so enviable that mercuric compounds became the norm in the hat shaping business, leading to more mad hatters,
and maybe to the phrase "dont pee on my hat and tell me its raining"
(just kidding about that..I have no idea where that came from)

But if the industry is using similar processes today...no wonder they are secret... ;D

Gents

I can say for certain that my hats are urine free!
Nothing but steam and elbow grease!

If anyone is going to be at Dixons on the last day, I'll be on hand. Stop by Scott's table in the big tent. Look for the guy in a funky hat.

TCA

the odder the story, the more people like it.  With as many legendary uses for urine as we hear, privies must have gone unused ;D

fact is hatters used the mercury itself as part of the pelt treatment.  it would be common to have inhaled enough mercury fumes to have developed mercury posioning which caused neurological damage resulting in speach and vision problems..  The phase "mad as a hatter" became Lewis Carroll's Mad Hatter character, Carroll grew up in a town where hat making was a major industry and he most likely saw the affects of the aliment which would have led to a early grave for most of them.
