How can oil be removed from leather
« on: July 29, 2010, 04:52:34 PM »
I need some help.  I have a new leather belt that has that dark brown/red color that was treated with oil when finished.  I need to get the oil out so I can add a little age color patina.  Anyone have ideas on how to?...Thanks..Carl

Was the oil added by the builder, or was the original leather "oil tanned?"  If the latter, I think it "ages" great with a good scuffing and beating, resulting in lots of lighter areas.  Not sure how to get oil OUT.  I live in a climate where good techniques for APPLYING oil are more the issue. ;)

The leather was original oil tanned.

I use a lot of THIS oiled leather for making camera bags and other outdoor gear.  It's tough as nails, and folks really like it because it's so easy to "restore" to original finish.  I use it for my shooting bags and accessories here in a wet climate, and just let it "antique" as it goes through hard use.

Read the description in that link, and see if it gives you some ideas for "antiquing" without trying to remove the oils.  I can guarantee that it's going to get really antiqued with no special treatment if you just use it lots.
