I have a long barreled gun (6' oct/round) I am working on that came to me along with a pre-carved butt stock. The lower fore end is about half the length of the octagon part of the octagon to round barrel.

I have cut back the width of the  fore stock to 1/16" at the round part of the barrel and 1/8" at the octagon part.

Should I transition my 1/8 to 1/16 near the wedding band since the lower fore stock is so short or should I bring the 1/16" all the way back to the entry pipe area on the VERY short lower fore stock?

Any opinions are appreciated.

6" does not sound like a long barreled gun to me, LOL.  I do my tapering based on the entry thimble location, and let the rest fall where it may.  No abrupt transition, actually.

Well........I am thinking the transition from 1/8" tp one 1/16" should be at the entry/rear thimble.. the wedding band is not the issue.......  it will be a long skinny gun!! assuming that you ment 6'... :o

Thanks guys. What you both have said is what I perceived as correct just as on any other gun but I am just not used to seeing  a 14" or so extra inches of octagon past the entry area.  ;D

James, will there be a swell at the entry pipe? If so, that would be a good place to do the transition.

You can also file the oct to 16 sides ahead of the entry pipe area.

I had thought of using a swell but now I may smooth it on out. I have a 16 facet now down near the ring.
