Next build if any?
« on: July 29, 2010, 09:09:41 PM »
A little early to ponder my oncoming winter's build; but must give it some thought prior to rounding up parts.   I have a barrel or two, a walnut half stock (Schuetzen?), a few precarves (2nds that I 'won'), seasoned c maple planks, and a Vincent half stock precarve.  and some I don't even know about I guess.

In any case nothing is frt and center for next build.  A Bedford?  Nah, can't stand the gaudy things.  A Lehigh? Nah would probably pound my skinny face.  A barn gun?  Now that might work!  The Vincent to be different around here?? Maybe! Chunk Gun (got em already) Fowler Ho Hum!  Got 'em and love to shoot 'em! Learn to and make knives Nah, can't even give them away!  Leather work?  Nah, I bleed too much.  Neighbor Lady ;)  Nah, too expensive and dangerous.  Southern mountain steel mounted rifle?? Been there got mucho  ;D  Plain Lancaster style?  (I know my limitations) been there and done that several times!

I'm in it up to my big ears, can anybody help me ::)     Just talking dumb, too much time on my hands seems like! ;D

I was thinking the same thing Roger. I have the parts to build other things, but I picked up a copy of KRA's book on Morivan Gunsmiths at Dixon's and now I've got the hankering to build another early rifle.

How about a Jacob Young style rifle in a .40 or .45 cal.  I have always loved his stock architecture, and that one is on my wish list.

Roger I'm thinking maybe the next build would be for me!
Maybe something tall & lanky with really good wit. ( as I know you)  just so: as I know it was from you!

Roger I think the Vincent Would be great for ya! I have not seen anyone try one in a long time and just think you could pour the nose entry area!! That would be a  hold new story. Ken

I'm hoping to start on my son's first rifle this fall.  Nothing fancy, he want's an iron mounted gun with a wooden patchbox.  I've got a 38" B wieght .50 barrel and a Dickert style precarved stock from Pecatonica.

Roger.....you should make a trip up our way, or better yet, get in touch with the Correll's, they come up this way quite
often.    I'll give you some great ideas for a simple barn gun, you can then go home and build one the next week.   No use
to drag out the building, after all, you're a shooter, don't waste all of your extra time building a gun.   Even if you don't
want any help, you could just come up and visit..................Don

Yeah ol Jimbo has been 'on' me to do just that for years.  What a way to screw up a day's production for Getz barrels... :o Which I hesitate to do!

Serious::: Barbara will be hung with a slew of rifles to peddle off at the estate sale as it is! ::)  So, do I build still another....   ???   Old age laziness setting in?  This is all buzzing around in my head this summer..   :)

If you are tired of rifles, why not build a pistol for a change?

Best regards

I like to shoot what I build (at least once in a while) and I found out years ago that I too skinny in the arms to shoot a pistol with a one hand hold.  So, I am not considering one such pistol...   (Over a log 'maybe') ;)

I truly enjoy the smoothbores and small bores.  I am finishing up a smooth rifle that may have potential and my little 25 is a lot of fun.  Or you can compete with Daryl.  I saw a picture once of a 12 bore English style halfstock rifle.  Had a 50-90 once built on too light a rifle that was fun to let others shoot.  I sold it as it was fun to let others shoot.

For myself it's a J.P.Beck fowler, based on the two in Grinsdale's book. Having seen both guns and photoed both am looking foreward to making sawdust fly. Too bad on the one gun the wrist carving is nearly indecipherable. My goal is not a documentary copy, but to create something from the same "bench" BJH
