Late TC Renigade hammar screw problems!
« on: August 06, 2010, 06:57:46 AM »
I have a TC Renegade that belongs to 4 H Shooting sports! It has a later style thicker hammer and will not let the screw get enough threads and somebody stripped the tumbler out about three turns! My question is specifically what size screw does TC use for this application? I purchased a new screw from Tip Curtis and he said you have one of the thicker hammers and TC did not lengthen the screw! With the stripped threads in the tumbler I need a longer screw! According to a brownells screw checker it is a # 6-40 tpi, I purchased a die that size and cut thread on a blank screw and still too small? Is it a metric screw or what am I doing wrong?  HELP HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dave, TC uses all S.A.E., nothing metric.  Best advice I can give is pull the lock, and take it to a big box store that has all those tin boxes, where you can test for the right size.  The betterr choice is send the lock to TC, with a note, and let them fix it for free, as it has a lifetime warranty.

You could (if you want) file the hammer flat thinner so the old screw can purchase the left over threads in the tumbler.....or better yet (as suggested) get hold of T/C I understand they will repair free,,,,!

Dave,
I agree with Bill and Roger.  I would suggest calling TC and explain the situation.  Be sure to mention the rifle belongs to 4-H Shooting Sports organization.  I'll bet they will help you out.

Poppycock.

I've bought / rebuilt / refinished / shot / hunted / resold a good 25-30 T/C Hawkens over a lot of years, and T/C uses the same lock and lock parts on all their sidelocks except the old smaller Cherokee, Seneca, and Patriot models.
I've upgraded many locks, and also hammers in particular, both cap and Flint, and never ran across such a thing...just remove the hammer screw, replace the hammer, put the same screw right back in.  Probably best to deal with T/C on T/C products...

Poppycock, Dang Bill, now that you've moved to longrifles, You're now starting to use 18th century language. ;D  You're still our go to guy for things TC.

Well, I still love my TCs and held on to a few special ones but after a steady diet of half stocks for 18 years, and getting on in years myself, I had to at least "try" a long rifle and was glad I did...but have no idea where 'Poppycock' came from...just sort of came out !

Readers,

Tip Curtis was correct when he said that TC had a later "hammer / cock" that was considerably thicker than the earlier style! The early style was allmost flush with the square tumbler shank! The later style is considerably thicker and you loose several threads of the hammer / cock screw and the screws get stripped out! I recently heard that TC has discontinued all parts for all the Hawken / Renegade etc styled guns! Is this correct????

Two days ago on Friday, a friend just received a replacement Flintlock assembly from T/C for one he'd sent in with a broken part.

Turn around time was a total of 8 days so it looks like they're still in business with a premium on customer service like always.

Seems like it would be much simpler for you to just pick up the phone, call T/C, and have them fix your problem.

Yes you are correct! I was told at Friendship that TC got completely out of the sidelock conventional business! He must have been incorrect!

Thanks!

I phoned TC service today and they said to ship the stock and the lock and they would fix it at no cost! She went on to say that they did not sell all the parts and did not get out of the side lock business!

Thanks for everything!
