Nipple thread.
« on: August 07, 2010, 02:58:16 AM »
I'm restoring an old Tranter revolver.
It have 4 of 5 original nipples but I would like to use new ones.
I can get them at 10 pounds each in England plus shipping but I find that Ruger nipples are almost identical. I can thread Rugers two turns into the Tranter cylinder. The difference is that Rugers have 28 threads and Tranters 30 threads.
Now my question:
If I get correct the tool to correct Rugers nipple threads, is it safe to use those nipples?

Martin, No I do not believe that would be safe. If you re-threaded them from 30 to 28 tpi I believe this would remove too much material and would leave you with basicaly a stripped out  nipple seat. There would be two different sets of threads in the same hole. Not safe!!! Do not do it my friend!!!!....Ed

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Long knife is right!

If the ruger threads are 28 tpi I'd bet the nipples are 1/4" x 28.

I don't have a metric conversion chart here but you should look first if there is a 30 tpi @ about 6.5 mm dia.

If the Tranter is of UK manufacture and depending on the age it could also be a whitworth thread size.

Thank you very much both for your helping.!!!!!
As long as I can measure thread is 7/32 x30.
Witworth is 7/32x24.

No. Thread integrity will be compromised. Buy the right part.

Normally I would suggest getting access to a lathe and making new nipples on it.  Only catch is that 30 tpi is one thread that does not occur on most lathes, unless I am mistaken.  Are you sure that the thread is 30 tpi and not 26?  British national fine is 1/4 x 26 and that thread size is pretty common on british percussion shotguns.  Keep in mind that diameters often vary from .240 to about .260 on original guns

Thank for all helping.
I will check this again but I have check thread two times 28tpi do not fit, neither 32tpi. Only 30tpi fit but it is very short section .209" so it is difficult to be shure.
Thanks

Martin,

In the box of nipples I looked through for you, I found several that appeared to be 30 tpi on my gauge.  That does not prove your piece uses 30 tpi, just that they do exist.
