Couple of Differnet Types Of Horn

  Woodsrunner asked about blowing horns on another post and it reminded me of this one, I do not think I have posted pics before. The other was done just beacuse the horn looked right.
 The first is a Hunting/Signal blowing horn it is about 14" around the outside curve (OC). The bands are pinned on.
The mouth piece is turned horn and pinned on.

 The second is a hearing horn or trumpet, it is about 16" around the OC. The bands are pinned on. Since the pics were take a hand strap has been added just below the second band. And yes it works very well.

Nice horns Tim...seeing them reminds me that I have an original
banded blowing horn with an applied mouth piece I need to photograph for you...I think blowing, or hound horns were way more popular than we give them credit for...till break action shot guns were substituted for blowing in the pack in the early cartridge days...or so the tale goes up here...

Here's a related question to both the Tims';  when building the tip, is there a reed inserted or is tip just has a small diameter hole to create the sound?

 Thanks Tim I would like to see that.

 Gary, I use a small diameter hole. I have heard tell of tuning them, maybe by opening up the hole. I'm not sure how its done but I would like to know.

I have one that I push a trumpet mouth piece into to blow.  Since I have been using a lathe for horns, I'd be tempted to turn a mouth piece from horn, using a trumpet mouth piece as a pattern.  The trumpet tubing is 5/16" I think.  I'll check on that.  The mouth pieces have a slight taper on the end gong into the trumpet.

Some are very plain; others more ornate.  A plain one would fit in best I think.

Sheeesh I just got fit for two hearing aids at the VA today,  Will you take medical insurance for one of your ear trumpets???

I have my Dads old fox hound horn i turned into a powder horn. I never could blow it the way he did so i thought at least this way i could get some use from it.  If i remember correctly he told me he changed the sound or tuned the horn just by moving his lips on the horn.

A small de-burring tool worked quite well on six Shofars I made a couple of years ago. You really need tight lips to get a good sound from them.  I have a rams horn that is almost impossible to blow.
