serial number???

I'm about to finish my first rifle and was wondering if by law i have to put a serial number.

No, not as long as its a traditional muzzleloader. They fall under the antique weapons description of the federal firarms acts.

Mine are all serial number " 1 " of that particular model !

    Laws can change from state to state. Fed. law may say NO, but state law may say YES. Which ever law is greater.

I number all my guns consecutively on the bottom of the barrel at the breech end and also the breech plug bottom.  Then my name and year on the top flat.

Had one customer go to an army reservation for a controlled hunt and had to give a serial number to the guard.  He used the year number on the top of the barrel which was fine with the guard;  it WAS a number!

Yep  each state and country is different .
 Remember that while  traditional muzzleloaders  have a leniency under the FFA .
They are all still considered firearms
 Also I would point out what is and is not Traditional is  becoming rather confusing
 What  may seem clear to us here or  at one government level . Is often not the same at the next  level  

 i simply date all mine with the date of completion   with 6 numbers .   month , day , year .  on the bottom of the barrel
