Death angel patchbox
« on: August 14, 2010, 06:44:48 PM »
I just started working on a simple plain patchbox for a hunting rifle for a friend.  In the process, I remember Art De Camp's "Death Angel" bullet boards, and thought that would be kind of a neat theme for a hunting rifle.
Attached is a simple (very simple) idea of what I had in mind.

Let me know what you think of the idea.

Will you file notches on the stock too??   :o   ;D  ;D

Not my cup 'O tea, but historically I suppose it might fly.   ;)

Size a shape fit the location.

I like it.  Although it will be harder to inlet, the inner line of your wings  looks better to me.  Check out the Isac Berlin box with the bow and quiver engraved on the lid.  This might give you some inspiration as how to handle the feathers at the  finial edge.

One more thing I noticed...  To my eye the area below the angel on the finial looks a little large in comparison to the angel.  It might look a little better if the proportions are adjusted a little.

Jim,

Well Crud..... I just couldn't wait, and I inlet it the original shape.  Wish I had waited and read your post first.  Your are definitely right.  Maybe, when I get to the engraving part, I can extend the wings down into the second curve??  Or maybe add something to fill up the space below??

Should have thought this out a little more.  The reshaping would have been the better way to go.

Is that Berlin gun in RCA??

Smallpatch,      Jim is right, bring the wings down a little farther. It will help shorten the lower half, then narrow it up a little. Draw it out on a piece of paper first to see how it looks. Cut it out an see how it looks on the stock.  Al

If you don't like it make another, with a larger Death Angle. It will have better perportion. You will be happier and so will your friend. It's all about the looks isn't it. And what you want other people to think of your work.   GOOD LUCK     AL

Maybe inlet a coupla pieces of silver into the wing tips to give it a little more fullness and a little bling.

God bless
