Bright Eyes and I are looking for some books on building  Powder Horns.  I know this is probably the best place to find out.

Scott and Cathey Sibley's book. "Recreating the 18th Century Powder Horn".

Great book and folks. I have the book. I will never make great horns, not enough talent.

Sibley's book is a good one and you might try to get one by Madison Grant on powder horns too as it is a great source also.     Gary

There's a new one out, "Powder Horns, Fabrication & Decoration" by Jim Stevens, that you might want to consider.  It's a basic horn building book but has a different approach in places then Scott and Cathy's book.  Doesn't hurt to have more than one reference.  The publisher is Schiffer and I know you can order it from them.

Rich, I know there are others with tons more experience than me, but here is another angle. I took a class taught by Roland Cadle and Art DeCamp earlier this year. A bit pricier than a book but hands on by 2 masters. Helps eliminate the second guessing you go through trying to learn from a book only. Not sure how far you are from Altoona, but was worth it for me.

Rolfkt,
Flat horn construction is not covered in Steven's book, it is pretty much basic horn construction.  He does go into detail on tools and equipment, cutting and fitting a butt plug without a lathe, and some good tips on layout and scrim engraving.

Never pass up an opportunity to absorb knowledge from real experienced horners, especially from horners like Art and Roland... ;D

Rolfkt, in case you don't already have one, The Buckskinning Volume VI, does cover making a flat horn including how to make a press.  Also covered is additional pictures and discussions of the elements in different styles of the American powder horn, including screwtips.  Great info for the horner to construct period style horns.

Ps., also good info regarding making period hunting bags by Lalioff.

One of the "Book of Buckskinning" books has a pretty good section on horn building.

The bookstore at Colonial Williamsburg had all the Buckskinning series books. Maybe try them? Good luck!

Perhaps my post of Aug. 28 on this subject was missed.  Here it is again:

"The Book of Buckskinning II"  has a very nice tutorial.  You can get it on Amazon (used) for various prices.

For my money if you are going to make horns it is a must have. Another is Making Powder Horns Book II 1996 by Robert D. Byerly.
