Handmade Thimbles...who makes?
« on: August 31, 2010, 09:55:46 PM »
This last week at the CLA there was at least one gent there who had handmade/custom iron thimbles for sale. There were quite nice, filed and ready to go, but having an exhibit at the show I did not have much time to make it back over that way to better examine and possibly purchase.

I am currently working on a all the parts for a new build. As of now I have all my forged hardwear ready...all but the thimbles. Anyone know who this may have been, or know someone else who has or will make me some thimbles.

P.S. I know there are some good tutorials on how to make thimbles, but with all of the other work I am doing on parts I would just like to buy them and save the extra work.

Mike Lea and daughter make the coolest ribbed fowling gun and trade gun thimbles on the planet as far as I can tell.  If you don't need super thin, original style formed thimbles for a smoothie, then many suppliers will suit your needs.

I have used many of the Ted Cash line of thimbles and thibles that you can buy from most suppliers...they are good never had a problem with them, but I am looking for somthing different. It would help if I gave some input on the gun in question.

It will have all forged mounts and the it will be built in a style that is very much Woodbury style "early gun" with a 38inch A weight .40cal. It will have a sliding woodbox. i am actualy building this gun for a special lady...thus shorter lighter barrel in smaller caliber.

I know that this gun is not a period correct piece...but that is okay because I am building this gun like she wants...not going for 100 period correct.

If you do not want to make your own from flat sheet, you could purchase plain, round thimbles and file wedding bands, rings, facets, etc. on them pretty quickly and easily to get that custom look.

Larry,

To be honest I have never purchased the plain ones...is there typically enough metal to do that kind of work. Any supplier of plainer ones better than others?

Thanks for that thought!

If you decide to make them, you can also take some steel tubing (Lowes),  and file them to whatever shape you want & then silver solder a lug on the bottom of them. This gives you a thicker pipe to work with & looks more like a cast one.  I didn't see any handmade pipes at CLA, but there is always something I missed. Dave Keck always has some nice looking long RR pipes, like a cast  Bivins  Lancaster pipe but longer.

This is a set I made for some tubing for a York rifle i built.   Somewhere I have 3 more photos of making it but cannot locate them on this laptop. This was my first attempt at making them out of tubing, I felt they and they looked pretty good so I used them.  Next time I will detail them a lil more & make them exactly like the originals. These are similar to a York rifle in the RCA book. All I could find in a York RR pipe were those thin metal stamped out pipes & I won't use those.

All three pipes are the same, except the entrypipe has a straight 3/8" extension out to the right.  I took the tubing & cut a piece about 2.5" long, split it, put it on a mandrel I made & spread the tubing out, put that over the pipe extension, soldered it on, filed it down.End result is the pipe looks 1 piece but was made with 2 pieces.

I picked up a couple sets of plain thimbles from Troy Roope, Stonewall Creek Outfitters.  Haven't used them yet, but they seem to have enough meat to adapt to most any purpose.
Here's a link:

Apparently the other photos are on my CPU & it is in the shop. I have 3-4 others showing the before I put the entrypipe together & the bottoms of them. As soon as I get it back I will get them on here, may be Friday before I can do that as just took the CPU in yesterday.

Most original thimbles I have seen are very thin. I now make all my own; I don't like what's being offered for sale, because they stand out as store bought. I like the handmade look because it's a much 'softer' look than machine made. But this is just my personal preference. They do wear to the point of crushing or breaking very easily.

Many jaegers used cast thimbles, and sometimes sheet metal front thimbles in combination with a cast rear thimble.

Even on thin sheet thimbles a surprising amount of filing can be done without sacrificing the integrity of the thimble.

Josph,
I am not sure if you were talking about the iron sets I had for sale on my table.  I have attached a photo (sorry for the quality of the photo) of the set I have left from the show.  What size are you looking for?

The thimbles I had left were made by an  old gentleman who sold them at Friendship in the 70's and 80's and has since then passed away.  I have been making the parts for my rifles for a while and had decided to sell them off.   You can contact me at rbpodge@twlakes.net if these were the ones you were looking for.
