Hungarian Canteen

Hello All

This is a unique piece that was given to me as a gift about 18 years back. It is not a period piece. I know it was made in Hungry and covered with horse hair. I have never seen another like it, and I am posting it here to see if anyone on this board has ever seen another.

Unless this was purely a tourist item, it tells you something about how valuable carrying a small water supply was to the people who decorated it.  Or perhaps it was for booze?

It has some Finnish style to the leather pieces.

I would never guess Hungarian.   I'm no expert for sure. ;)

My wife would like to see the straps. Sorry to be a pain in the a-- but she makes me my textiles. Sometimes. Never on a schedule. At least not on my schedule.

Interestingly... I have done searches for these over the years, and have never been able to find anything similar. I found to similar items last night... one saying Austro-Hungarian, and the other Swiss.

I've seen these type of canteens/flasks in Hungary, especially at the flea market in Budapest.  But I've also seen them throughout Romania, in the "Transylvanian Alps".  Could they be of Gypsy origin? I think they were used to carry spirits.

I have a similar one I picked up in Hungary while deployed with the IFOR/SFOR in Bosnia.  Mine is covered with goat hide.  I was told that these were carried by shepherds.

I found some for sale on-line at a Hungarian Import Store in California. I asked if they had any information about them or if they had a traditional name. They responded with "We'd be more than happy to sell you one".

I lived in Hungary and also did a lot of traveling throughout the Transylvania region of Romania. You can find this type of canteen made new for the tourist market but you can also find originals in plenty of antigue stores in the major cities or the average weekend markets that only locals would know about. Are you looking for a value on it or just curious as to whether it may be original or not?
 
The colors are typical for the entire region of Hungary, Slovakia, Transylvania and western Ukraine. Pretty much anywhere that fell within the borders of Hungary during the Austro-Hungarian empire.

And, yes, they would have been common to Hungarian "cowboys" in the Puszta (Great Plains) but these were popularized in their use by Hungarian mounted cavalry much like the better known Cossacks in Ukraine or Russia.

Its a great find if original. Very cool even if not! Its got me wanting one of my own. Next time I am back in Hungary I may look for one. Great piece.
