I am heading out to take an engraving class at GRS in Emporia next week. I will be traveling from Baton Rouge. Anybody know of any good historical spots out in that area that I can visit while out that way.

Jim,

You like to eat?  Hays House 1851 Restaurant in Council Grove.  Neat place and good food.  It is the oldest continous operating restaurant west of the Mississippi.  I've eaten there 6 or 8 times in the last few years while bowhunting.   Council Grove is 35 miles from Emporia and I'm pretty sure you will go thru it on your way to and from.  It's about 20 minutes off I-70.  Neat town.  The Santa Fe Trail ran thru there and you can see the wagon ruts and some markers in places out on the prarie.  We use a deer processer in Emporia to butcher and cold store our deer.  BTW, I live in your old neck of the woods and am a friend of Bill Millican.

If you go through St. Louis, stop at the museum. They have a large collect of old guns. Even the last Hawken that Sam built, it was built for the museum.    GOOD LUCK    AL

Council Grove Kansas is about 35 miles northwest of Emporia. But GHall is correct about the restaurant there. Good food, good service and well worth the trip. For desert try a piece of their peach pie. Best I've ever tasted. And you might want to check out the Kaw Mission while you are in Council Grove. The Kaw Tribe were the original Kansans and is the name from which Kansas is derived.;D

Thanks guys for the info, always interested in a good place to eat. I will be sure to put it on my to do list.

GHall you are right about Bill being a good friend and a right smart shooter with a flintlock. Let me tell you a little story about Bill and me. We were camping at the Owl Hollow Gun Club for one of the matches that they held there. Bill had his tent pitched in the field just off the firing line and was right up against the wood line. We got up early and was fixing breakfast and getting cleaned up so we would be ready to shoot when the line opened up. Well Bill found a tick on his head and he then asked me to check his head over to see if there were any more ticks on his noggin. There we were looking like a couple of monkeys checking each other, I'm sure a pretty strange sight to anyone that did not know us. Yep I am proud to say that Bill is a good friend. Bill is also a good student of southern rifles and has done a good bit of research on the Bulls and Warrior Mtn. location in Alabama.

Anyway thanks again for the info.

I went out to GRS last year and loved it. You'll have a great time!
