The Museum and Library Committee proudly unveils "The Schreckengost Collection" by Rob Watt. It joins other significant original works exhibited here by Jim Whisker ( many contributions of original biographies) , Michael Briggs ( North Carolina exhibits), and Wayne Elliot ( “ Jo Bogel Rifle). It also joins the KRA Foundation Exhibit, The Berks Co Exhibit and the Oswego Museum Exhibit; the only place where these exhibits were presented on the Internet for all to see, study and enjoy. We thank all the contributors who have offered their guns and their commentary. We hope to bring you many more.

Copied from a reply in the Library...

Great job Rob Grin Grin   Your efforts are much appreciated, and, the Shreckengost's that I have had the pleasure of speaking to are happy to see the recognition finally being given to a family of fine 'smiths!  Hopefully some of the family members who have these firearms hidden away can now be persuaded to show them the light of day!!

A wonderful presentation. It is good to see the guns and family story come together. A great research project and thanks for presenting it to all of us to see.

Wonderful research and presentation.  If you had multiple views and/or dimensions of all those rifles, you could publish this.

Mighty fine research! This should probably become a book on the S'gost family of gunmakers.
Lots of good data suported by a fine photoraphic record. My compliments to you Rob. Thank you for making it available. It certainly belongs in the library and hopefully will be the genesis of many more such studies.

Thanks to all for the words of encouragement.  My plan is and was to continue to gather information on the SGost family, obtain higher quality photos and then get it published for posterity.  I appreciate the suggestion on getting specific measurements of the guns and plan to begin to gather that information.  Happy to see that it is being enjoyed.  I received pictures of yet another Shreck rifle today and will ask for permission to post.

By all means, please continue your work on this subject. Far too often, The later percussion makers are ignored, or overlooked as research interests,  to the detriment of expanding our knowledge about the craft and its practitioners. Most work is done on the early, 'glamor builders' whose work commands the higher prices. Since most such builders worked so long ago, there often isn't a lot of information to flesh out who they really were, whereas oftentimes there is a wealth of data on makers of later periods. I have learned a lot from you and am much the better off for it. I too have a S'gost rifle which will eventualy find its way on to this site, even though it is signed with another name on the barrel. Other than that oddity it is a classic S'gost rifle. Thanks again for all your work and putting out there for all to see.

Dick,  I've seen three other SGost rifles that were signed with names other than Wm. SGost.  One is signed Daniel Snyder who was a relative of SGost and one is sign "by Wm SGost for_______" but I can't remember the name.   A third is signed Johann McCowan or something similar to that.  Likely he did this pretty often.  I would appreciate it if you would email pictures to me of your
SGost.  Love to see it.

The exhibit is a great example of the education that this site provides.

This one is as Taylor said "Holey Moley"

It very forcefully demonstrates that fine artistic embellishment done in small remote shops did not completely die at the end of the "Golden Age".
It also points out, as many of us know, that the American ML rifle was never completely replaced by the factory made breechloader when the Winchester lever action was put on the market.

Most recently, I find that the Shreckengosts were connected by marriage to
the Truby gunsmiths of PA and the Zartman gunsmiths of Ohio.  Trying to make
a connection with Jacob Roop of Dauphin Cty, then Centre Cty.  The Schreckengosts formed a church named Rupp Church in Armstrong Cty in 1796.  I'm thinking this might be a morphed spelling of Roop, much like other names
morphed as they became anglicized (spelling optional).  Any support for this appreciated?
