distorting ball
« on: September 26, 2008, 02:22:47 AM »
I had to debreach my log gun barrel  1 1/2 x44 x1 - 66 .45 cal. G.R.Douglas .When it was debreached I tried some different sized balls using same .020 teflon ticking set ball just below muzzle cut off excess patch pushed ball full length of barrel then pushed back out the muzzle.I use a short starter with the O.D. about .015 undersize and the nose was cut with a ball mill and lapped in to sphere of ball. Using a .454 ball left a sizeable ring on the ball and if the short starter was not square with the bore the ring was bigger on one side. The rifling showed up real well on the patch and ball.I tried .451 - .445 & .440 balls with no ring to speak of on the .440 ball. Reassembled the rifle and shot it fifteen times using .440 balls 93 grains of 3f goex and a .020 teflon patch and had a group 1 1/2 wide X one inch high. I use a pin front sight and the spotter (7 inch round)
