Buttstock on Ebay
« on: October 28, 2010, 11:03:24 PM »
I just saw this on ebay, at first glance it's interesting, but some of the inlays look like later additions and the patchbox looks like something off of a Hagerstown Christian Hawkin rifle. Oh, and last but not least, the price is crazy for a buttstock.  Anyhow, I'm interested in other opinions.

Interesting for sure. I believe this butt is from a swivel breech rifle. From the open inlet of the side plate. The fish inlays do look out of place from the rest of what is there. I'd say more in the percussion period with the nailed patch box side panels. It is a lot of money for just the butt end.

I also saw the listing for the butt stock. If they think the butt is worth that, I wonder what would have been asked for the whole rifle. I think what they are showing is for real.

Looks pure Upper Susq' to my eye. Architecture, carving, inlays, comb guard and toe plate, all look to be from that school. The PB is odd, to be sure, but is not outside what is sometimes found on these rifles. Compare with the unusual side hammer gun posted sometime back; that one has anomalies in ornamentation, as does this gun.
Joel posits that this may have come from a swivel rifle and it does have that look to it. Would make perfect sense if that is the case. There is a separate forearm offered with the buttstock, but does it belong?
The price is a bit optimistic, isn't it? A nice gun once upon a time, but as Poe's raven said "Never more!" and we do think you for bringing this to our attention. I will get my bid in immediately...NOT!!! still, fun to look at.

I'm not convinced the forestock goes with the butt. I'm not sure that it's a swivel, either. The comb inlay looks like it's been picked out.

It appears to me that the whole patchbox is "applied" ( not inlet)  and the door is too long for the gun, end extends beyond the buttplate. Certainly the fish are applied, yet all of the more appropriate furniture ,were it there, was inlet. Hookie is my opinion.

Wow! That's waaaay on the optimistic side as far as I'm concerned. I have an entire swivel breech, minus trigger guard, that I'll happily take that much for!
I agree with no gold on the upper river area. But I think the fat goldfish are late additions, and the PB lid is a replacement.
The seller says the forearm goes with the butt, so evidently it's not a swivel gun. Also says he's looking for some other parts too. Also claims it's an S Baum rifle,,, so if he has the barrel with S Baum on it, the lock, the missing inlays, etc,,,,,,,,,,,

I was just wondering if the patch lid is really too long. It is popped open which makes it look like the lid is too long.  I was just playing with a couple of lids here in front of me and after opening them a little bit, it looked like they were too long. After closing them, they fit within perimeters and behind the butt plate. I'm just guessing from my observations. The two fish have pins in close, but yet different areas. I could understand the one fish on the cheekpiece (I've seen stranger things), but the fish under the cheek piece seems out of place. As for swivel breech or not, I don't have enough experience with them to say one way or the other. Looks like the rifle might have been a grand one at one time though.
