« on: November 05, 2010, 04:50:13 AM »
Hi folks;I recently acquired a very nice 60/70 vintage custom Hawken, with a Bill Large barrel,53 cal,1 3/16.Lock is a signed HE Robbins, and is a fine rifle.Proof be in the shootin. The gun came fom near Sidney,Nebraska, from widow of a nmlra member.I was just wondering what you guys could tell me about this gun.
I have a custom flintlock from 1978 and the finish on it is comparable to this one.
Thanks for your help.I like the long rifles, but am a Hwken nut.Dave

I have pics on photo bucket. How I get 'em here?

I remember Robbins locks. Is it signed on the barrel or lock?

These are a few photos that mountainman70 sent me by e-mail.
Dave, I will send you a detailed PM on how to post photos.
Then, I am going to start a thread titled, "Ah little humor" in Over the Back Fence.
I am in no way making fun of anyone. We all have to start somewhere on new things.

Update on this ol Hawken-  pulled the triggers/guard unit, side of triggers marked K Weimer.Butt plate is a casting, the top comb extension is solid cast.Trigger guard is silver brazed onto plate, not screwed like new ones.Interesting ol smoke pole.
I am going to sell it due to no work.Price is 2000.00 plus shipping/insurance.
Thanks,Dave

The breech plug snail looks identical to the one Bill made me in the early 70s. Cost for 1&1/8-36" barrel and hooked breech(all hand made)and tang was $75.00 if I remember right. Boy those were the good ol days.    Gary

Boy weren't they I remember Numrich barrels for $24.95 for 42" and $19.95 for 32"
Douglas standard for $39.95, and Siler percussion lock kits for (I think) $19.95.  You could build a nice rifle for the price of a swamped barrel now.
