IMPORTANT-Fred Miller -Retiring.
« on: November 09, 2010, 03:23:34 AM »
Fred Miller Has asked me to post this to the ALR Forum.

Many people retire to pursue their hobbies such as gun building.  After many years of inletting barrels and duplicating stocks for other peoples hobbies, he is ready to have a chance to engage in his.  Fred wants more time to hunt, flea
market and take care of all those projects that he has never finished and start some new ones that he has wanted to do for some time. He is ready to not feel the need to be committed to the shop on a daily basis.

He would like to thank all his customers and all the friends he has made over the years for their patronage and loyalty.

With that being said, he wants me to inform you that as of  November 15th  2010 he is no longer accepting orders to inlet barrels and shape stocks
for muzzleloading guns.

During the next week or two he will finish his present orders and ship them to the owner.

Any orders received after the above date will be returned or delivered to Dave Keck at Knob Mountain Muzzleloading for completion.  All customers will be
notified in advance  as to their desires.

Soon after Fred has fulfilled his orders all of Fred’s patterns will be transferred to Dave at Knob Mountain Muzzleloading in Berwick, PA.

Any patterns that do not belong to Fred but belong to other builders will remain with Fred until arrangements can be made to ship them back.  Fred will contact them personally to make sure they are dealt with properly.

Any questions should be addressed to Fred by calling him at 570-922-1861

Again Fred would like to thank all his friends for their understanding during this transition and hopes to see them all at a show soon.

Long ago, Fred did a barrel channel for me. Great job, really fast and he was a really nice guy to talk too.  Now, years later, I am beginning another project that could have used his help.  I'll manage but I certainly appreciate the help I got years ago.

Great, Dave's a good man to pickup Fred's pattern's. Glad to see that they will all be available in one place and not scattered about all over the place.

Have always enjoyed dealing with Fred and seeing him at different shows. Hope he continues to go to the shows.

I hope we are lucky enough to continue to see Fred at the CLA Show, just not hauling away a pile of stocks and barrels to work on.  Thanks Fred for your trust and all the great work you have done for all of us.

It would be fun to know how many contemporary longrifles Fred has had a hand in through inletting the barrels for people - from first time builders through some of the finest contemporary builders out there.

He is leaving things in the hand of a fine craftsman.  Mr. Keck does great work.

I also hope we continue to see Fred at the CLA. He has provided a great service for many of us. I know that Dave will carry on the same dedication and quality that Fred provided. I wish them both well.

For the past three years I have been splitting my work between Fred and Dave.  Dave always provided me with top notch inletting, as did Fred.  Fred helped Dave set-up his machine and tutored him for a while.

This is the way it goes for me.  A day late and a dollar short. Fred put up with my many questions. Finally he told me not to worry that he has inletted a barrel before and would take care of me!! And he did. This man is right up there with any in my book.  I will miss not having him out there any more.   But my sons first rifle was inletted by Fred. That will always mean a lot to me
Good luck Fred

Fred,

Congratulations on your retirement. Glad to know you have decided to catch up on other things in life worth going after before you can't do it anymore.

Will really miss you. You've done several stocks for me and I always knew I could count on you and your work.

Thanks Fred for being there for us and best wishes.

Maybe it's just me, but I always considered it odd that people post replies to someone who isn't even on the list.  Kinda like talking to the wall.

Oh well...maybe someone is printing them all and will hand carry them to him.

TOF,   You and Fred would have gotten along well,  both opinionated, but good hearted is just that Fred is a great craftsman, who never went to far in the fine points of technology.   Her was a farmer who was more at home on an IH Farmall than a typewriter.  Everytime I would stop at Fred's place we would have a gab session, show and tell, and he would ask about what was going on with the ALR board.  Fred personally knows so most of the names in the collecting and building field, and he goes to most all the major shows.    Yep, when this thread runs it's course I intend to print it out and give it to Fred---I know he will be touched.

Ron,
I only used Fred one time a couple of years ago and found everything you said to be true.  We talked a couple of times on the phone.  Others had told me he was as opinionated as I, so I let him do most of the talking. ;D  I enjoyed the conversations and his work was top quality.

Don't know about Fred, but IMO, Dave is not opinionated. An opinion is a strong belief in something that cannot be proven as fact. Dave seems very careful to only share beliefs that CAN be proven as fact and the more fact available, the more blunt those beliefs are conveyed. Educational and entertaining as $#*!.
