Prewashed or non washed Teflon.
« on: November 09, 2010, 06:19:23 PM »
Do you long range or bench shooters out there prefer the prewashed patching before the teflon is spritzed on or do you prefer the unwashed?  Prewashed is much softer and would possibly fill the square bottomed groves better, or am I close to the delirium tremons on this, meaning are my brain waves ferhuddled ???

What say you, please help me to be able to sleep better at night, or in my tree stand for that matter....

I bought mine not washed. The maker Francis told me to just dampen the un-lubed side with
my tounge and that would soften it up so it would seal better.  Works like he said. Just don't
eat any!.

Eating it might not hurt much - I don't know either way.  I thought it needs to be burning to be toxic and the fumes or smoke from burning Teflon is super toxic.

Agreed Daryl, Teflon is very bad news when introduced into the environment in any fashion.

Well thats one place my tonque is not going, although I have been doing juust exactly that for a long time and am concerned (maybe way too late).  I have been getting hold of the prewashed kind (of patching that is ::) of late.  Wondering if any one out there has found out if one or the other shoots tighter in their rifle/rifles. ???

Apparently not Daryl.  I watched a show on TV last year about the amounts of Teflon in the environment & it's even prevalent in breast milk now among nursing mothers especially here in North America.  It's used a lot for windshield wipers & washer fluid to prevent streaking & thereby ends up in our water supply.  It concerned me enough to change my wiper & fluid purchases.

Got a feeling that the Teflon coated frying pans were PRIME in introducing it directly into the digestive systems of millions of people.  Perhaps it's something that stays with you instead of getting flushed out.

Some windshield washer fluids have a lot of it in them- I've one right now that beads water after use to the point you don't need wipers on the highway in a downpour. Guess I'll not get any more.  A number of wiper blades have it in them too - Canadian Tire and other's sell them.

I was going to say something about baby feeding, but will refrain - in good taste, of course. :D

I don't want to rile or muss anyone's feathers, but..why would some not dream of putting a scope on a traditional longrifle think nothing of using a teflon patch?   Just saying.....the old stuff is good enough for me. It's the keep it simple principle.

I'm still wondering ,if anyone out there has done a comparison test between the two from a good rest and if they found a noticeable difference in group size and of course which one shot tighter??   (From a good rest of course)

Send me a sample of both and I'll have at it, Roger.  I'll use the .45, so I can get into my store of .454" and .457" balls.

My first thought was to do exactly that; but on 2nd thought You would probably get your death fooling around in zero (or worse) weather with snow up to your armpits.  Our weather here (now) and thru this weekend just beautiful calm and sunny in the high 50's.  I decided why let ol Daryl have all the fun, so I'll head for the range tomorrow and run my own *&%# test/tests!

I'll report on it later.    I would bet a buck or so that there will be little difference.

Besides nothing like some practice before our Sunday ham and wino shoot! ;D

Rodger, I seemed to like to prewashed, seemed like the tight fit we all enjoy shooting prefers the softer material to fill the rifling out.  Seems the more ridgid the more apt to tear at the muzzle with the short starter, especially without a crowned muzzle.

I can't see using stiff material at all.  All fabrics I buy, I wash twice. If purchasing this teflon coated material, I'd be getting pre-washed material.
