Crazy Horse's Beaded Rifle Scabbard Discovered!
« on: December 09, 2010, 01:46:51 AM »
This rifle scabbard recently surfaced in a tepee at the Pine Ridge Reservation...
No not really,  as I just put the finishing touches on the aging of the leather.
It is constructed of brain-tan American buffalo.
The beading is applied directly to the leather's surface. I attempted to copy the aged look of an original rifle scabbard from the 1870's.
<p>I realize the 73 Saddle ring carbine is considered a modern shooter but it was in the batch of pics and I'm an old dude and didn't know how to omit it. but it is an original tack-decorated early winchester.

Curious. How does one distinguish "aged" leather from real "antique" leather as it relates to Native American artifacts?

Last year I was at the Native American Museum in New York City.  This case looks like it could have fallen out of those exhibits.  Great job.
