I'm ready to shoot my newly completed T/C hawken .54 that I built from a kit. My question is: should I first proof the barrel? If so, what kind of load would be recommended? Thanks.

I think I would just use the maximum charge (for example, 120gr. FFg -- I don't really know what it is in the manual) listed by the manufacturer and call it a day.

What does T/C say is the maximum load in their .54 barrel?  I would use that as a "proof" load.

Yes, but you had more information and a link.  I can't find a .54 caliber T/C Hawken load chart, only .50 (110gr. max).

thanks for the responses, guys. The kit didn't come with a manual (it's from the early eighties), so I figured that I would rather be safe than sorry, because there seems to be more useful knowledge here than just about anywhere.

Go to www.TCArms.com, Manuals section, View and/or download the manual.

Data charts are in the back, Max listed for a .54cal is 120grns Goex 2F.

Not sure why you'd need to 'proof' it, or what you'd look for, they are mass produced barrels with a history for excellent quality...

I guess this does not take into account the rash of catastrophic barrel failures in early production. But that was 30 odd years ago.

I would proof it with 2 charges of powder and 2 balls. Just to make sure none of the add ons , like the breech come adrift or are machined just a little too deep in some spot.
If a percussion its harder to proof out of the stock than a flint.
