Kentucky flintlock pistol buildt from scratch by Runar Stava
« on: December 21, 2010, 12:37:02 AM »
Runar asked me post pictures of the pistol and ask for comments and critiques. The pistol is his own design and his first attempt at a kentucky pistol. The barrel is a 50 caliber octagonal barrel, 12" long, 13/16" wide, from Ed Rayl that Runar swamped himself. The stock was made from scratch . All the brass parts made from scratch out of sheet metal. he built the lock himself from a chambers small siler kit. The stock is stain with winegaroon and finished boiled linseed oil.  I really like the profile of the stock he drew.

Best regards

Your friend did an excellent job on the pistol.  If this was his first attempt at a Kentucky pistol, I can't wait to see what his next one will look like.  By the way, it has an Easton Pennsylvania feel to it (in my opinion), similar to the work of the Young family.

Runar,

That is a fine looking pistol.  Wonderful work for a first attempt at a kentucky pistol.  Good job!  I am going to give one suggestion if you don't mind.  With a nice pistol such as this, the lock deserves a little attention in my view.  It would be nice if it were filed and polished up a little.  It could be left fully bright or it and all the other steel parts could be darkened a touch to take of the bright edge.  Hope your planning another flintlock project.

I would add, that even just a little engraving would set it off, but a great job, well done!!

For a first attempt I don't see where he has anything to apologize for..

The lines are good and this is the important thing.

I like it.

Hei Rolf!  Tell Runar to register on the ALR site, on second thought I'll tell him myself.  Once again, he's did a fantasic job.  He needs to show the folks how he makes some of his parts.  Hans våpen er en arbeide av elske.

I'll second Bookie's comment.  After seeing what Runar could do on the reproduction postman's weapone that Rolf showed earlier, it is pretty clear that Runar is one skilled craftsman.  Tell him to keep up the good work.  We'd all like to see more.
glaedelig jul og godt nyt aar!!

Gary Trapper, what we said in Norwegian closely translates into: Merry Christmas and happy new year....with both traditional and new spellings.  So here's hoping you have a good'un.  Med Venlig Hilsen, Bookie

That's a fine-looking pistol. Congratulations on a job well done! Have you had a chance to shoot it? If so, how does it group?

Runar asked me to post a reply for him.  Runar is registered as a member of ALR. He says he can read simple english  but insists he can't write it. Runar plans to put sigths on the pistol and brown the lock and the barrel. He asked me to thank you all for your kind comments and tell you he hopes to test the gun after Xmas.

Best regards
Rolf

I've made lots of them.  It's easier to make a cutter to make the cylindrical peg, by drilling a hole of the appropriate size into the end of a piece of drill rod, cutting teeth with a triangular file, hardening and tempering it, and milling the roughed out peg right down to the flat fly.

runastav...very nice little Lehigh valley rear sight.  But I'd cut the cup deeper, so that there is just a thin web of steel in the notch.  You will get a clearer sight picture that way.
