When to burnish
« on: December 23, 2010, 08:39:09 PM »
I am in the process of refinishing a flintlock stock that was coated very heavy with some type of poly sudstance that resisted everything. I am scraping the stock down and staing with my home brew vinegar stain thats almost ready. I was curious when and if I should burnish the wood. I was unsure is I do it before if the stain would penetrate properly.
After I stain i need to apply a finnish. This is my deer rifle and will be used in all weather,

If you burnish before staining, the stain won't penetrate right.  Some burnish after a sealing coat.

Hi Marcus,
You do not need to burnish a stock at all.  If you want to do that then wait until after staining and the first coat of finish.

What dave said.  I like to seal with Shellac, bring it back to bare wood and then burnish beforemapplying oil varnish. sure eliminates any whisker issues!!
