Building a Swivel Breech Pistol
« on: January 12, 2011, 03:37:03 PM »
I have started building a right hand for myself and a left hand for my friend Rolf :)It is based on the nice book, Building a Swivel Breech by Dave Waters.
Rolf made new drawings in metric system, we will  use 3/4" cal 40" barrels  let the photo speak!

Runar,

The problem I see is that Rolf labeled those drawings in some foreign language!  Have you found some good pictures of original Wender pistols to help in the transition from American rifle design to pistol design?

Hei Runar:  Wilkommen til ALR website.  Det se ut som engelsk din er mye bedre end du synes.  This looks like a challenging project.  Rolf has gone to a lot of work with these drawings and translating everything into Norwegian.  We all look forward to see what you build.

Greeting Runar,
I hope you will post some photos of the project as you progress.  This looks to be a big undertaking starting with converting the drawings to Norwegian and metric.
Cheers,
Ken

Make sure the locking pin has enough protrusion into the revolving plate to allow considerable use without wearing and getting loose.
The action a friend has does not have much protrusion, 1/32" maybe and this IMO is not enough.

Thanks for buying my book. If I can be of any help please let me know.

I know you'll enjoy the project and the gun when it's finished.

Thank you all :) I do not always follow the book ;)So my next step is the rectangular holes in the frontplates, as you can see I have epoxy two plates thogether.
Ours holes will be 7mm wide and 8mm high. See photo how I measure it up, and use my homade chisel before truing up whith files. Chisels can be made of 6x6mm HSS laths bar, brassbolt for handle and grind flatchiselform 45 grades.

Greetings Runar,
I am most interested in your project and keenly aware of the challenges ahead. This is no small project you have undertaken. I especially appreciate your sharing with us the approach you are taking as you layout, measure and cut the parts to shape. Your Norwegian experience with metal work and how you apply it to the swivel breech pistol will keep me captivated.

As others here have stated, on these unique projects, it sometimes takes two or three attempts until the final form is in hand. But that is the inevitable learning curve and how we grow in our craft.

Keep up the enthusiasm and the posting of your progress.

I plan to post my latest swivel breech rifle project shortly, a Reading style which has been a joy to build.

Have a great day.

Runstav,

Looks great so far.  By the looks of the top of your vise, it seems you are pretty familiar with the use of a file and hacksaw :)  Keep up the good work.

Runar,

Great stuff. A suggestion for posting. Hit "enter" between your pictures as you load them so they run up and down and not left to right. It will make it much easier for folks to read as they won't have to scroll left and right. Keep posting!

Very awesome project, Runastav!  I purchased Dave's book a couple of years ago and hope to make a swivel breach one day.... I'll be saving your posts to refer back to in the future.  Keep it coming!

Thank you Squirrelheart :)
The tumbler, link and fly is small critical part that must function. I made the link from a ALLEN screw 6mm, it is very ductil and just hard inoff to saw file and drill ;)
