Trivia Question on Ramrod Threads

Ramrod accessories are threaded 8-32 and 10-32.  If one was to go buy a tap for those, is it NF fine or NC coarse threads?  Thanks.  SCL

8-36 = NF

10-24 = NC
10-32 = NF

Thanks.  I was trying to repair the threads on a stainless ramrod that had been damaged removing a broken jag, and was having problems with the 10-32 tap I had.  The tap was labeled 10-32NF, but I thought I remembered seeing a 10-32NC tap at Home Depot, and was wondering if I was using the wrong tap.

As it turns out, I did see one labeled 10-32NC at Depot.   Irwin/Hanson sells one on a cardboard card, with 10-32NC printed on the card twice.  However, closer examination shows 10-32NF on the tap itself.

So, I guess I thought I had made a mistake, but turns out I was wrong.

What I replied with is from the Machinist Handbook.   You might see them labeled UNF or UNC.  For our purposes it is the same as NF or NC

Use steel studded jags no brass studs please.  Maybe thats what broke off in your case

I allways thought 8x32 & 10x32 were just that, 8x32 & 10x32 regardless of nc or nf, maybe some one will correct me on that.   Gary

This is the packaging that confused me to begin with, and made me question if the 10-32NF tap I was using was the correct one, or if I should be using a 10-32NC.    The package is labeled 10-32NC twice, but the stamping on the metal die is 10-32NF.   

So, I think Gary T is right - a 10-32 is a 10-32 and an 8-32 is an 8-32.   Why the manufacturer printed 10-32NC on the package puzzles me, but it's a puzzle I can live with.

I think 8x32 & 10x32 are considered NF and 24 tpi is considered NC in those tap sizes.  Gary

There is no 8-24 tap.
