Pics of Birdseye Maple stocked guns please...
« on: January 18, 2011, 05:24:41 AM »
I have come into possesion of a maple stock with light birdseye in it.   I would greatly appreciate any pictures of guns stocked with similar wood.

Thanks very much, Skychief.

These two pics are of a French target pistol I made for a friend.  The stock is bird's eye maple.

Thanks DTS!   You are the only one to post a pic of a Birdseye Maple gun here and on another forum in a full day.

Maybe Birdseye Maple isn't used much.   In any case , you built a beautiful pistol!

Thanks much, Skychief.

It is not used much because it is very hard to find.  If a mill gets a hold of a Birdseye tree it is going to become veneer.  I have only seen one in 20 years.

I'll go into the vault today and pull one out that will knock your socks off...thanks to Jim Chambers, Jim Klein, Bob Harn and I forget who else had their hands on it.

I buy great birdseye maple up to 12/4 easily here in the upper left corner. 16/4 is problematic and needs special order.

Steve Zihn is finishing up a rifle for me now (no pix yet) that is plain rift cut maple and using a piece of spectacular birdseye I'd hoarded for a patchbox lid. I saw a lid once that was made from maple burl. 'Twas wonderful.

Here's "Pox"

I got this piece from a guy out of Gladstone Mi @ 25 years ago,It has eye's from stem to stern with no "clear" area's at all! I'm lookin'for another one like it,I slipped on the ice and cracked her through the lock area. I was able to repair and stabilize her,but would like to re-tire her and make a new stock using the originalparts.

Years ago I saw an original late period Dickert rifle that was tight birdseye from stem to stern. Neat rifle - wish I had photos!!

Medbill, that really is a socknockeroffer!!! :o
Looks like one I Jim Klien's once built.
I built a silver Vincent rifle with eyes like that, but don't have pics on this computer. Actually Gene C, owns it now, maybe he would post pics of it.

No guns.....just wood.  I call this "wallhanger wood" because the birdseye is only on one side and the other side goes against the wall.

Nice guns!  It's German birdseye maple so the story goes.....Jim finished it up and it came out great!  I was just at the right place at the right time.     ;D
