Shooting in the snow
« on: January 31, 2011, 07:30:39 PM »
Local club had its first shoot of the year yesterday. Lots of snow on the ground, flurries in the air, but still a good time. Only seven shooters, I'd have though cabin fever would have brough out a few more!

If we didn't shoot in the snow, we'd only be shooting six months of the year.

Wow you get 6 months without snow?  We have about 9 months of snow and 13 months of wind in WY...LOL

Seems that way here, too, RwBeV, sometimes. Here the late Brad Hall, shooting the flying goose target, during a bit of a snow, just a year ago. The packed down trail he's standing on, is about 3 feet higher than the ground below.

It was a nice sunny day here today and a balmy - 24 deg C   Had two friends over for a trail shoot [snowshoes recommended ]  Last Monday it was -37 deg C  .  That will do, 'till the real cold gets here ;D
We switch to the minus 40 windshield washer fluid for patches on the trail shoot when it gets down in temp. Or, like today, we'll use our paper cartridges. [ Daryl's design ] which is popular because we can load without taking our mitts off!

Looks like fun. Next time add snowshoes!

I just ran the primitive biathlon in Jeffersonville Vermont on Sunday. It was a balmy 18F with no wind. Some years it has been in the negative numbers with a stiff breeze.

It's a ~2 mile snowshoe course through the woods with 4 stations and 9 shots. Each shot knocks 5 minutes off your time. Some of the "gazelles" run the thing in 30-35 minutes, while those of us with sense and less sturdy knees run (stride?) it in 40-45. The targets are various sizes and shapes of steel gongs. The tough ones are 2" wide and 12" tall.

It's a great way to beat cabin fever. They get about 150+ competitors. I spoke with one guy who had come down from Quebec.

There's another one in Manchester VT the 12-13th.

Hmm......we got 6" of snow down here in AL a few weeks ago.  Whole North half of the state was pretty much shut down for a few days.  Schools out for an entire week, garbage didn't run for a week, dog looked at me like I was crazy when I tried to make her go out and do her thing. :D

Gregg,
Yes they do, and without a permit.  But you have to build your own because no one sells them.  There is no such thing as a gun shop.
Black powder is available at hardware and farm supply stores.  But I believe it is blasting powder.  But, hey, it works.
I just don't have the tools here to build one.  Haven't looked into getting a barrel. Would have to make my own lock from scratch.  You get the picture.
